Job description

Grow the Vegetables You Dream of Eating!

Be the czar (wth picking privileges) of an 8500 SF organic garden whose 36 raised beds beget a huge variety of blue-ribbon vegetables, raspberries, blackberries, rhubarb, and espaliered fruit trees. You will join a skilled team managing seven oceanside acres of restored 1903 Olmsted gardens on a 30 acre estate hugging Boston's North Shore. Adjoining your edible cultivations are water features surrounded by perennial borders, a silvery lavender allee, and a terrace of starch-white blooms bracketed by an elegant Tea House and sculpture pool. Beyond are stepping stone paths through fragrant rose bushes leading to pine-needled paths through native woodlands. It's a pleasant place to work.

The vegetable and cutting garden needs a passionate custodian from April through October who dreams of raising fabulous organic produce. This is a hands-on, 20-to-25 hours a week position requiring specific agricultural knowledge and horticultural skills with a creative spirit and a dedication to detail.

This is not for an aspirant; comparable experience is required as well as an upbeat attitude, a strong work ethic, a team spirit, and a shared commitment to orderliness and cleanliness.  The successful candidate must be able to assist in lifting 50 pound plants and supplies and be comfortable performing outdoors in all usual spring, summer, and fall conditions.

You will work under the direction of the Head Gardener to hand-cultivate raised beds (planting, weeding, mulching, irrigating, and harvesting) in artful crop sequences with IPM control of insects and diseases.  Soil fertility is maintained by compost, amendments, and biological inoculants.  Compensation will be commensurate with skills and experience.

Spend this summer growing what you love with popsicle breaks in hot weather, dips from a private white sand beach, and the opportunity to audition vegetable varieties that are unique and fun, without the limitation of market or CSA expectations.
