Job description

The American Food History Project Intern for the summer of 2014 will work with the American Food History Project team to develop and run interactive, engaging museum programming that focuses on the role that food has and can play in understanding the American experience. The intern will help the program team connect the public with history through a deeper understanding of the role that food has and continues to play in American history.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
For the summer of 2014, the Food History Project Intern will:
  • Research and develop food history demonstration programs
  • Research and assist with grant proposal writing 
  • Assist with developing and executing museum programs
  • Develop a marketing/outreach plan for Food programming
  • Research potential Food programming partnerships
Ideal candidates will have an interest in expanding the definition of the role that food plays in understanding the American experience, strong writing and research skills, and an academic background in history or education with an emphasis on food history research.  

Learning Objectives: The Intern will…
  • Learn and use museum and educational program evaluation techniques
  • Learn and develop research and program development skills associated with planning public history and museum programs
  • Learn and develop firsthand knowledge of how public programs in a large museum operate, as well as the behind-the-scenes expertise needed to produce them

Through its collections, research, and public outreach, the National Museum of American History explores the infinite richness and complexity of American history. It helps people understand the past in order to make sense of the present and shape a more humane future.
