Job description

Organic Growers School (OGS) is a 501c3 non-profit organization based in the southern Appalachians that inspires, educates, and supports people to farm, garden, and live organically. http://farmers.organicgrowersschool.org http://www.organicgrowersschool.org  

OGS seeks a Gardener Programs Coordinator who will report to the organization’s Executive Director. OGS is requesting proposals from motivated, knowledgeable, and organized individuals who are interested in an innovative employment opportunity.  Specific responsibilities include:
  • Coordinate OGS Gardener Education Advisory Committee 
  • Build curriculum pertaining to all aspects of organic gardening
  • Write technical articles and blog posts pertaining to organic gardening
  • Teach classes and conduct workshops for the public, including beginner and advanced gardener audiences
  • Evaluate educational content and delivery on an ongoing basis
  • Organize workshops, field days, garden tours, and other events
  • Promote OGS Gardener Education, and the organization as a whole
  • Provide for the continuation of programming through both fee-based educational programs and innovative, successful fundraising
  • Work with other staff to achieve organizational goals within OGS’ strategic plan 
This position will require an energetic self-starter who possesses many of the following characteristics: 
  • Deep knowledge of organic growing techniques
  • Ability to teach others in a positive, practical way
  • An Understanding of and ability to share information with others about many types of agricultural methodologies (e.g. biodynamic, permaculture, French intensive, square foot gardening)
  • Ability to work under pressure and solve problems
  • Fundraising experience, and grant-writing abilities 
  • Good organizational and people skills
  • Ability to work with the public
  • Computer skills
  • Willingness to work with an expectation that a portion of fees from educational events will cover some or all of the salary for this position.
  • Ability to work with the board and staff of OGS to ensure success for the entire organization, across our various programs, and in accordance with the strategic plan 
Work will be based in Asheville, NC area, estimated minimum of 10 hours weekly. OGS has set aside a small amount of funds to cover starting pay of the successful candidate, but long-term success in this position will require that the revenues generated by educational events exceed the cost of delivering those events.  OGS has a twenty-year history of success in using this model with our Spring Conference (www.organicgrowersschool.org/annual-spring-conference). The successful candidate will assist OGS in extending this concept to other venues and other times of the year.
