Job description

On the Bus

Outstanding in the Field is now accepting applications and resumes for their 2013 Tour Crew. If you love food, farms, have extensive restaurant experience, love to travel and are a (very!) hard worker, consider applying to join us on tour this year!

We are hiring for the following positions:

Bus Driver – Drive the OITF tour bus, provide general mechanic/handyman support for the bus and OITF trucks & trailers. May also serve or assist at events in some capacity.

FOH Manager – Manage staff and service at the events; must have previous fine-dining/professional service experience. Must be adaptable and have great communication skills. Past management experience is a huge asset.

Service Team Members – Will primarily serve at the events. Provide professional and friendly service in conjunction with being a strong worker-bee! Enthusiastic and personable BOH workers are also encouraged to apply.

Day-of-Event duties for the crew include:
  • Setting up, tearing down each event from start to finish: setting up tables, chairs, kitchen, equipment, packing and unpacking trailers, hauling water, folding napkins (just to name a few things…)
  • Learning about new farms, food, wine and menus at each event
  • Professionally and enthusiastically representing Outstanding in the Field and providing a wonderful experience to chefs, farmers, winemakers and guests across the country

Other general tour tasks will also be divided up among the crew, including:
  • Guest communications
  • Inventory management & purchasing
  • Truck & trailer driving
  • Hiring temporary staff
  • Administrative tasks
  • Blogging/social media
  • Photography
  • Expense tracking

Successful candidates will fill one of the above-described positions, plus have other skills to offer to fulfill day-to-day duties on the road.

Positions start on June 1 in Santa Cruz, California and end in late November back in Satna Cruz. A huge part of being on the crew is traveling with the team for 6 months across the country! The OITF crew will become your very close family: you must be flexible, tolerant and understanding to work, live, sleep, eat and play with your new family- think about what that means before you send us your resume and cover letter!!

Tell us about your experience, what you can contribute to the team and your special skills: staffing@outstandinginthefield.com

Interviews start in mid-March.

Traveling Service Staff

This year we will also be hiring service staff that are ‘’off the bus’. They will be committed to crossing the country and working with the Outstanding in the Field crew at events, but have their own vehicle, and take care of their own food and accommodations along the way. They have opportunity to spend time with the crew, but these staff will be independent for the most part.

This worked great last year for two of our staff who worked with Outstanding in the Field on event days, but were also free to explore and travel at their own pace (including sleeping places other than a bus) on the “off-days”. These applicants should also have past fine dining service/restaurant experience – they will primarily be serving at the events, as well as helping with set-up and tear-down.
