WE DON'T SEE THINGS AS THEY ARE . . .
we see them as we are.
This has been a perplexing year - to say the least. If we had a nickel for every time someone echoed the sentiment, 'What are they thinking?' (in regard to someone that holds an opposing view) we'd likely have enough funds to fix the damages of this past month's natural disasters.
As we awaken from the numbness caused by overwhelm, I hope that we can all take a few steps forward together. In particular, this week we're thinking about the Earth (and those that inhabit it). We're not interested in proving that climate change is a real thing, so much as helping everyone understand that our actions have consequences. A friend explained it best: If you have one person in a phone booth, it's all good. If you put 4 people in a phone booth, all of a sudden it gets uncomfortable - it fogs up, the temperature rises, it's harder to breathe.
While small actions might seem insignificant, when millions (if not billions) of people make small efforts, it has a huge impact. There's lots of work to be done on a larger scale, but in the meantime: don't drive if you can bike or walk, bring your own bag, don't take things you don't need, say no to extra / unnecessary napkins and packaging, compost food scraps, turn off your lights and power down your electronics, opt for warmer clothes before putting on the heat. While we know that nobody is perfect, and it's impossible to do everything right all the time, even just sticking to one small goal can help.
Mother Nature is complex and we'll never control her mechanisms for balance. But everything we do to lessen the extremes is worthwhile.
