THE MORE SOMETHING IS SHARED . . .
the greater its value becomes.
We've got a little spot in the woods where we go to decompress this time of year. We're grateful for the beauty and bounty of this small patch of woods. As our winter CSA winds down we see greenery pop up all over. Not many people know about / have access to these woods. And sometimes wild food gatherers are hesitant to share their secret spots for fear that they'll get overwhelmed. But we've spent each different day this week sharing the woods with a different friend.
We spend an hour or two walking about and sharing our knowledge of the treasures that hide in plain sight. While the ramps led us there last year, one friend recently taught us how to identify nettles and knotweed. Another, wild mustard greens. And just yesterday, we decided to search for morels. Did we know we'd find them there? Nope. But we figured it was worth a try.
A quick jaunt yielded us a dozen, and while we're confident there were WAY more, it was just enough to make a memorable meal to share with friends.
The woods have yielded so much more than just the goods that we glean from them. The excuse to get out from behind our computers, get some fresh air, and share an experience and stories with friends, is just as delicious as what we find there.
