NICE THINGS PEOPLE SAY
I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful words of wandering wisdom in this week's newsletter. They simply could not resonate more soundly for me! I have been looking to connect the dots and am anxiously awaiting that often talked about light at the end of the tunnel. I'm embracing the journey, indeed. Checking new postings on GFJ has become a daily routine...Or more recently a routine practiced multiple times per day. Thanks so much for making me feel that I'm not alone in my wallowing.
- Arianna, Job Seeker
Thank you for today's newsletter. It really spoke to me. Your words soothed the daily panic I feel at not having "figured it out." I've thanked you before for what you do, and I'll thank you again. For the newsletter, the job bank, your wisdom and your encouragement to our food community.
- Alison, Job Seeker
I just wanted to say that I really appreciated the message in your newsletter today. I was having a kind of lost in the woods day, and it was a good reminder that these patches of not knowing and struggle are par for the course when you're creating a new business and making your own path. You are really providing such an incredible and much needed service and becoming a very important hub for this incredible community!
- Lisa, Business Owner
We are so pleased to be of service.

Sometimes the desire to do something all at once takes hold, and our motivation to do something GREAT paralyzes us into not doing anything at all.
But after taking a step back - and referencing one of our favorite authors / speakers Brene Brown, which always helps - we were reminded of the importance of letting go of our perfectionist tendencies. We were reminded to not get overwhelmed at the complexity of the simple statement 'I want to change the world for the better', but rather to make one small change - to take one step in the right direction.
For some of you that means taking your first step into the world of food. This can be a frightening prospect - more like a giant leap then a small step. When making a career change, we often seek out experiences that others will deem worthy of such a change. We wonder, how can I - at once - transition from my seemingly successful yet soul-sucking job to something that is equally impressive but actually of great interest to me? That is a seemingly impossible leap to make.
But let's break it down.
You'll notice that in today's newsletter we've featured several opportunities for Intern and/or Assistant positions. They start at the very bottom of the totem pole, but they are opportunities to learn, to meet incredible people, to put yourself in a new and productive environment, and to give you some time and energy to plot your next steps within the world of food. No, they won't give you a degree at the end of it, but your time doing free or limited pay labor might give you something far more valuable - solid experience and opportunities to contribute. Best of all, you don't have to pay to participate in them.
We know that an entry level, part-time, or internship position is not the right starting point for everyone, but the point is that the road to improving our food systems starts with all of us taking steps to do things a little bit differently. If this is not the right step, we are positive that there is some other alternative route that is. Hopefully this will open your eyes and inspire other ideas that will set you on your path.
'They' say it can't be done, but we always love the satisfaction of proving 'them' wrong. It might take a few years to do so, but it will make the payoff that much more sweet.
Onward,

In the food world, there is much ado about cheese. So when you come across a goat dairy, as lucky folks like us often do, the first thing that comes to mind is an irresistible tub of chevre or an adorable wheel of aged cheese that fits in your palm. Louisa and Lucas are breaking the mold with their goat's milk caramels, which won a coveted Good Food Award in 2012, and make an excellent finish to any cheese course.
Pssst! July 31st is the last day for entry to this year's Good Food Awards. Click here to learn how you can compete. Read More
