THE PRICE OF ANYTHING . . .
is the amount of life you put into it.
The past few days have been a reminder that demolition happens much faster than construction. The current state of our union is causing us to take pause - and there's a fine line between pause and paralysis. But we know that we cannot sit still. We know that we cannot be silent.
This newsletter is not about politics. It is about the values upon which we built Good Food Jobs: that everyone has a better life through openness, honesty, support, generosity, and inclusiveness. Varied beliefs. Open debate. Abundance and gratitude over scarcity and entitlement. 'Better' does not mean it won't be hard or inconvenient, but the challenges are worth the effort.
We believe in democracy and respect the process of electing our officials, but not at the expense of injustices toward people and the planet. And we respect the office of the Presidency, only so much as it respects the systems put in place to create liberty and justice for all. We urge you to remain mobilized in whatever way that you can - calling elected officials, writing letters and postcards, reading various news sources across the political spectrum, and breaking bread with people who have similar and opposing views to you. It's impossible for any individual person to tackle every issue, so concentrate your efforts on the ones that matter most to you. Every little bit helps.
If you are at a loss for how to proceed, here are just a few resources / sources / causes that we have found helpful at this moment in time.
OPPOSE THE PIPELINES
President Trump has revived the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipeline projects. These efforts have enormous environmental and social implications - ones that we believe far outweigh any financial gain from continuing the projects. If you want to oppose the pipelines and stay abreast of ways to continue to fight fossil fuel projects that violate the science of climate change, the rights of Tribes, and the will of the people - then sign up to follow coverage from 350.org.
CONTACT YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS
The Women's March is just one place where you can download postcards to send to your senators (they even have a zip code tool to help you easily find the contact information and a list of topics on which you can write - take your pick). Even better - call your Members of Congress. The calls hold more weight than emails or petitions. Or decide to write a letter to the editor of the paper of your choosing. Or use this guide to determine how to mobilize in a grassroots way.
PRESERVE CHECKS AND BALANCES
The immigration ban is overtly egregious - possibly by design. In an unprecedented move President Trump placed his senior advisor Steve Bannon on the Principals Committee for the National Security Council. Our government was set up in such a way to have appropriate checks and balances. By appointing Mr. Bannon and removing the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the director of national intelligence the President is granting highly sensitive information and decision making influence / power to someone who has not earned it / could easily abuse it. If you oppose the Ban on immigrants this past weekend, be sure to speak up about this appointment. Bannon now has the ability to influence national security issues - the very kind that create refugee needs in the first place.
These are just a few places where we will concentrate our efforts this week. We'll remain active in our own communities, and we hope that you'll do the same.
With admiration,
Taylor & Dorothy
