Our friends at the New Amsterdam Market have been tirelessly trying to revive New York City's Fulton Fish Market building as a public market for the better part of a decade. We believe in their vision to preserve this historic space in the South Street Seaport. Visit any other country and you'll find that the pulse of activity is at the city-supported markets, where people travel from near and far to purchase fresh food. New Amsterdam Market is that heartbeat in New York City, and it belongs in a permanent home at the old Fulton Fish Market building.
Whether you live in NYC, or just have an interest in supporting public markets across the United States and the world, consider signing the petition to Save Our Seaport. It takes 30 seconds of your time, and it really can make a difference.
If you have the motivation and the means to go further than that, consider attending the New York City Council hearing on the future of the South Street Seaport on Thursday, March 14 at 9:30am, in the City Hall vicinity. You can RSVP to the hearing at rsvp@newamsterdammarket.org. Hint: for job seekers out there, this is a great way to connect with movers and shakers that believe in the same things that you do!
Lastly, if you are inclined, please spread the word. This good deed may pay it forward when you're trying to get your own movement moving.
It's your lucky day (again!):
Last week we gave away our first pair of tickets to the Just Food Conference and GFJ Get Together to Zoe Lieb, whose answer to our question garnered 123 likes on Facebook. The bar has been set! See below for a recap of last week's question, the winning answer (but be sure to check out the others, too, as the post was chock full of useful responses), and the details for this week's ticket giveaway . . .
LAST WEEK'S QUESTION
What's the best job seeking advice you've ever received?
ZOE'S WINNING ANSWER
Be honest with your interviewer and on your cover letter! Open up about why you really want to work for them, and your personal qualities that make you an ideal candidate. The ability to be personable through writing will take you a long way.
The adventure continues. How can you win a pair of tickets to the Just Food Conference? Simply respond to this question via our Facebook page. The answer with the most likes by 8 AM on Thursday morning (03.14.13) wins the tickets. So go ahead - take a shot! And spread the word. S/he who is most diligent and thoughtful will be rewarded.
In light of our intro, and the ability to get good ideas to spread, our question is as follows:
QUESTION
What is the best advice you can give to New Amsterdam Market to help spread their message? Or more generally, what advice do you have for starting a movement?
(Get creative: you can include resources for them to reach out to, tools for them to use, methods for them to employ . . . the options are endless).
Good luck!
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy
