WE ARE NOT, BY NATURE, VERY POLITICAL PEOPLE . . .
Admittedly, we often feel disenchanted with the so-called democratic process in the current political climate - and it's most certainly exhausting to be barraged by the media coverage of an election cycle that takes up nearly half of the elected term in question.
This is why you hardly see us talk about the government or politics in this newsletter or on our site. We know that there is no 'one size fits all' when it comes to policies, structure, or leadership. And we inherently value a diversity that seems to be lacking when a whole country tries to tackle big issues.
But we also can't disengage completely. Our home state of New York is hosting the presidential primaries today. And while we don't have unwavering faith in the process, we hope to remain as active and engaged as we can given the constraints of the current system.
Whether you are a registered Democrat or Republican (or self-identify as something entirely different altogether), we hope that you (and our future political leaders) will consider this week's Words of Wisdom if / when you vote in the primaries and the general election: try not to become a (wo)man of success but rather a (wo)man of value.
The President of this country is but one person. While we can appreciate the need for a figurehead, we also know that we cannot put our faith in just one person to solve all of the problems and challenges of our civilization (or to be solely credited for the triumphs). Our hope is that the individual who winds up in office can understand, appreciate, and mobilize a collective. We are all responsible. We are all capable. The successes and the struggles affect us all and reflect on us all.
May we all be engaged in this strange thing that we call life, together.
