WHAT MOTIVATES YOU ?
The answer often lies somewhere between what we think / hope motivates us (curiosity, generosity, and long-term benefits) and what is easy / enjoyable (entertainment, personal gain, and instant gratification).
When you operate a website, you find a lot of information out there about how to tap into everyone's lizard brain - how to provide click bait, and get people to open emails, and how to lure them down a rabbit hole in your virtual space.
There might be some merit to that. It could mean more eyes poking around the website for a longer amount of time. And sometimes that translates to being able to do more good (for example, match more incredible job seekers with worthy employers).
But there is a fine line between doing things for the right reasons (amplifying the amount of good you can do) versus doing them for the superficial ones (being able to brag about your Google analytics stats, without necessarily understanding what they mean).
Real life (and work life) often falls somewhere in between.
So this year, we're experimenting with something that we hope will encourage meaningful interaction. We don't know what motivates you, but we definitely know what motivates us: we like talking about / sharing things that we love*.
Starting today, we'll be hosting a series of giveaways via the newsletter throughout this year. As a grand experiment, we don't know where it will lead, but the unknown has never stopped us before.
So yes, this is a bit of click bait - but the things we will give away are things that legitimately make our lives more meaningful, more enjoyable, and / or more fun.
First up: this milk frother. I know what you're thinking - you already have a milk frother. Your mom gave it to you a few years ago and it's been taking up space in the back of your kitchen cabinet ever since because it 1) does not actually work that well - there's no way that it could ever replace the latte you get from your favorite shop, and 2) it goes against your very stringent single use appliance rule (i.e. you cannot have any piece of equipment in your kitchen that only has one highly specialized use - that's a waste of space and money).
Believe me, when I brought it up in our household, my significant other scoffed. Now he goes to bed every night dreaming of his morning latte. We use the frother at least thrice daily (and often more). We get around the single use rule because technically it can do many things: hot froth, cold froth, and just warm milk - and you can use it to make your cup of cafe (coffee), hot chocolate, golden milk, earl grey latte, or whatever beverage that makes you excited to roll out of bed.
This thing will certainly not save the world, but we can almost guarantee it will make your everyday life a little bit better.
