THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR TRUE CONNECTION . . .
Two weeks ago, we asked which food professional, from past or present, you'd love to be friends with. It seems that, unsurprisingly, Julia Child has won many of your hearts with her combination of culinary mastery with magnetic lightheartedness and joy.
Other mentions (in order of most popular) included Anthony Bourdain, Jacques Pepin, Samin Nosrat, Sara Moulton, MFK Fisher, Nigella Lawson, Jane Grigson, Charlie Vogel, Nigel Slater, Julie van Rosendaal, Claire Saffitz, Molly Yeh, Asma Kahn. (If not all of those names are familiar to you be sure to look them up - all of their work is inspiring.)
In many situations, folks had never officially met their idols, but the connection was real, reinforced by the power of the work that we all do, and the way that food can bring people together. This served as a reminder to us that the keys to connection are authenticity and hard work, two traits most valued by the individuals chosen.
It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking there is a shortcut to connection, and although the formula is simple, it takes time to master. And at the end of the day, there is no better feeling than feeling connected to someone else.
In friendship,
