IT STARTS WITH ONE.
We've all heard it before. It only takes one person to do the right thing, to take action, to try something new, to believe in an idea. It takes one person to smile and say 'have a nice day', and countless other people's days will be better for it.
When I was a freshman at Cornell University, I took Psychology 101, a class famous for its enigmatic professor, James Maas, and its enormous enrollment, so many students that each lecture filled a concert hall. I often think about a study that Professor Maas elaborated on regarding group psychology, where a person stands in a crowded place, screaming for help, and people look toward the sound but don't approach the person in need. In the second part of the experiment, the person screams for help, but they single someone else out in doing so: 'Help! Can the man in the red shirt please help?!' And sure enough, the man in the red shirt steps right up, and others begin to do the same.
Overcome Hesitation
You've probably witnessed this scenario before - at school, on the street, on a random, insignificant day. And we've all heard the inspiring stories of heroes throughout history who stepped forward without being asked, who took a stand for something they believed in, or felt compelled to offer help without hesitation.
What I often wonder about is what happens in that brief moment of hesitation. Why do we look around before we step in? What stops us from answering a call - from another person, or from inside ourselves? I'm sure that each one of us has dozens of answers to this question, on any given day. But today, we're urging you to think about all the energy that is stored up in just one person, and what might be accomplished or created if we let it out.
Cheers,
