I SPENT A FEW HOURS . . .
reliving a now classic book: I re-listened to the audio version of Tuesdays with Morrie. I can hardly believe it's been 22 years since it was first published. The ideas in it are just as pertinent as ever - and I imagine will be even 200 years from now. Here are some reminders of the gems unearthed within the text:
The culture we have does not make people feel good about themselves. And you have to be strong enough to say if the culture doesn’t work, don’t buy it.
As you grow, you learn more. Aging is not just decay…it’s growth. It’s more than the negative that you’re going to die, it’s also the positive that you understand that you’re going to die and that you live a better life because of it.
Don’t let go too soon, but don’t hold on too long.
If you’re trying to show off for people at the top, forget it. They will look down on you anyhow. And if you’re trying to show off for people at the bottom, forget it. They will only envy you. Status will get you nowhere. Only an open heart will allow you to float equally between everyone.
Too many people walk around with a meaningless life. They seem half-asleep, even when they’re busy doing things they think are important. This is because they’re chasing the wrong things. The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.
Giving to other people makes me feel alive. Not my car or my house. Not what I look like in the mirror. When I give my time, when I can make someone smile after they were feeling sad.
Giving is living.
Embracing material things and expecting a sort of hug back...never works.
Money is not a substitute for tenderness, and power is not a substitute for tenderness. I can tell you, as I'm sitting here dying, when you most need it, neither money nor power will give you the feeling you're looking for, no matter how much of them you have.
There is a big confusion in this country over what we want versus what we need…you need food. You want a chocolate sundae.
When the temperatures rise and the tensions rise and life becomes overly busy, it's easy to forget about these simple pleasures and truths. At the end of the day the things that matter are nature and music and connection with others. We repeat it often because we often need the reminders to re-calibrate our compass.

If you're caught in that summertime trap of feeling like you have so much you want to accomplish that you're going to wind up doing nothing...maybe Road Scholars will be just the ticket for taking away every excuse not to do something.
Can you guess America's favorite ice cream flavor?
One solution to feeling helpless in the climate crisis: plant trees.
We've always loved the little-known baked good category of: the buckle. Now that blueberry season is officially here, it's the perfect time to try this one.
got a tidbit? drop it here for us, and you just might see it in next week's newsletter.
