WHEN YOU HAVE MORE THAN YOU NEED . . . build a longer table, not a higher fence.
Life seems to be so much better when we attempt to operate from a place of abundance, rather than scarcity. Nothing seems to define this principle as beautifully as the site of a money jar at an unmanned farmstand, a friendly little sign somewhere urging shoppers to make their own change, and a palpable sense of warmth and trust.
We can think of dozens of examples in the last few weeks where we felt fortunate enough to give and receive generously. The beauty of this principle is that it applies to all manner of resources, well beyond money - including time, expertise, contacts, food, equipment, knowledge. It's wonderful to see how people live by these words of wisdom - lending a hand, sharing the bounty of the harvest, nourishing each other with homemade treats, or bonding over stories. Here are a few recent experiences that we found particularly inspiring:
- Our neighbor has two dozen rows of grape vines planted in her yard (see below, right). A few weeks ago, she put out the Pick Your Own sign, allowing people to buy in bulk for 30 cents a pound. We would get our fill daily, piling up our little basket with plenty to snack on. Every time we tried to pay her, she claimed we had hardly taken any, and that she wanted us to have them free of charge.
- Another neighbor recently invited us to frequent the walking trails on the property. It's too beautiful not to share, he said.
- We had to great pleasure of participating in a friend's 'baby shower'. A few dozen friends rolled up their sleeves to harvest carrots and chop / stack firewood - two looming tasks that are best done pre-baby and with many hands.
This week, we urge you to be open to sharing your gifts, as well as receiving those from others. There's room for everyone at the table, and the world feels so much more abundant when we can all partake in the bounty.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy
