HAPPINESS IS NOT A GOAL ... don't get us wrong - we want everyone to have the opportunity to be happy. But as we always say, searching for Happiness is about as effective as searching for a Significant Other. Or a Job. If you walk around looking for it with tunnel vision, then you'll often miss the very opportunities that will bring you the end result that you desire.
Here are some of the things for which happiness seems to be a by-product for us these days:
- Getting our eyes away from the computer screen and getting our hands into the soil
- Taking late afternoon walks with our neighbors
- Participating in rituals and traditions that happen at regular intervals, like yearly pumpkin carving or weekly craft nights
- Baking, sharing, and eating cake, on birthdays and otherwise
- Hopping into bed by 9 PM and reading until we drift off into a deep slumber
- Doing a favor, without keeping score
- Writing weekly newsletters and getting responses from folks who say that the words spoke to them - life is always so much better when we feel like we're not alone
It turns out that most of the acts that bring us happiness are those that cultivate our relationships - with other friends, strangers (otherwise known as new friends), ourselves, and the environment around us. These acts bring us happiness, so we try to do more of them, more often (we say try because we can't do all of them, all of the time - especially since trying new things is also on our list of things that bring a sense of purpose and happiness).
What are the acts that bring you happiness? We hope that you'll have the chance to do more of them, more often, too.
Your companions,
Taylor & Dorothy
