FIND A WAY . . .
or make one.
Yesterday we woke up to an inch of snow on the ground. It's been the third snow of the season in our neck of the woods, the kinds of snows that are so welcome. They are serene and picturesque without being inconvenient or tiresome just yet. It reminded me of the stark juxtaposition of a morning that makes you want to stay under the covers and read a book, and the realities of that day's To Do list.
It seems to be a time when life is full of these competing forces: the nights are longer and darker, but there is a strong desire and/or obligation to see everyone, socialize more for the holidays, and close out the year showing gratitude in various forms to the friends, family, and colleagues that have had a positive impact on you this year.
It's at once restorative and exhausting.
And it makes you wonder: how will I get everything done? This week's words of wisdom bring us some insight. At first glance, the words made me feel inadequate - there seems to be no way to fit everything in. But I've realized that the last part - 'or make one' - grants me the opportunity to see this season's special projects as a way to take a breather from some of my regularly scheduled duties. Because without the special events, or visits with friends and family, or time devoted to some big picture items or once a year rituals, life just becomes a race of going through the motions - and a relentless and exhausting one at that.
Today, the shoe drops on our newsletter. Yes, it's right here in front of you, but it is not the one that we intended to send, chock full of ideas for meaningful action to take. This will have to be our meaningful action for today: to say that it's okay to change course momentarily - especially to prioritize something else that is extraordinary.
If you're looking for a way to be productive without having to actually get-up-and-go, the Stone Barns Center has your answer: their 9th annual Young Farmers Conference is being livestreamed this year, and you can watch the online workshops tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday right here: http://www.virtualgrange.org/learn/young-farmers-conference/.
