FOR THE PAST FEW WEEKS . . .
we've posed a question in this newsletter (see below in the section 'we want to hear from you') asking you for feedback on how we can improve GFJ. As your responses trickle in, we're noticing some themes that are worth fleshing out. In particular, a lot of folks have asked about a term we dread the sound of: networking.
We prefer to call it making friends. Semantics aside, it's actually an intentional difference. The former indicates collecting contacts to broaden your web. It implies getting ahead or expanding your influence.
But here's how we look at it: close human relationships build a solid foundation. This practice is most useful when it's done in a genuine way, from a place of curiosity, sharing, and mutual respect.
A simple Google search will yield over 880 million results on 'how to network'. While we are all for inspiration, 'hints, tips, and tricks' rarely yield the results we're looking for. You know what they say: 'Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.'
The truth is that the best way to connect with people is to consider how you would like to be treated. If someone were to contact you, what would you like them to say? What mode of communication is best? What would make it easier or more interesting for you to respond?
Also consider your own strengths. Are you better at writing or talking in person? Who do you already know that you might like to learn more about?
And finally, think creatively about how to truly get to know someone. Our favorite example comes from a lovely lady named Gina. (You may recognize her name since she helped us run this year's GFJ Holiday Refresh.) We've worked with her for several months now, but it all started (officially) with the invitation she sent below (shown in the Instagram image on the right). Her card came in the mail, along with some tea bags, and turned a bi-coastal video chat with a relative stranger into a shared experience that made us both feel more connected. And that made all the difference.
Do you have a networking success story? Or a specific question on the subject? Chime in. We are always eager to hear and share.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy
