ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE ...
We're always humbled by the power of people in numbers. Last week, we wrote about the lasting legacy of Edna Lewis, and included a book giveaway where the only requirement for entry was that you share the name of a person of color who has inspired you in the food world.
There were some names that we recognized, of course - Will Allen, Leah Penniman (we're super excited for her upcoming book Farming While Black), Samin Nosrat (Salt Fat Acid Heat has been sustaining our stomach and psyche all year), Vandana Shiva, and Michelle Obama - to name a few.
But there were so many others - well over 100 names, and it brings so much excitement and inspiration to learn and explore them. Here is a very short list, in case you're just as eager to explore:
Kavita Shukla // childhood experiments led to an invention to extend the shelf life of fresh food
Matthew Raiford // 5th generation black farmer that transitioned his family farm to organic
Danii Oliver // Founder of Island to Island Brewery in Brooklyn, breaking people's perceptions of fermented beverages by bringing in the culture of her island roots
Rowen White // Seed Keeper from the Mohawk community of Akwesasne and a passionate activist for seed sovereignty
Cathrine Sneed // her Garden Project uses the power of plants to show people a path
We loved hearing about your mentors and bosses, relatives and relative strangers. It goes to show you that you never know who might motivate and inspire you - or who you might go on to motivate and inspire.
We hope to continue to share more people / projects in the weeks to come. There is so much power in sharing, and it doesn't work in only one direction - we hope that you'll share news of the above people and their great work with others.
