NICE THINGS PEOPLE SAY
Two months ago I was feeling aimless in a new city, unhappy in a new job, and wondering what direction to head in. I opened up my GFJ email, saw two positions that sounded interesting, and contacted both businesses. I got both jobs that week, one at a bean-to-bar chocolate factory and the other with a nose-to-tail catering company. I'm leaning about food every single day, working with my hands, and becoming part of an inspiring group of chefs, farmers, and foodies. Life is good. Thank you for existing, I owe you one. Or two, technically.

It was some seriously stiff competition with 92 submissions in our first ever GFJ Instagram Challenge, but we had the feeling it would be tough to choose, which is why we left that up to you guys. The winner with the most Instagram likes was jmilesm's image of yummy eggs and all the things you can add to make them even yummier. Congratulations, @jmilesm!
We'd be remiss if we didn't share our own staff favorites with you. Our unofficial but honorable mentions include the images below (click on each one to see who is behind them).
To our surprise, Memorial Day in the Northeast seemed a bit more the tone of President's Day weekend...there was lots of rain all week leading up to the weekend, but it let up just in time for Taylor to pick a lawn full of dandelions (below left) and make a first attempt at Dandelion Wine. Later on, with freezing temperatures and over 2 inches of snow in Vermont, she opted for the 7-hour goat leg (below right) over the outdoor grilling option that usually accompanies Memorial Day.
Meanwhile, Dorothy was dodging the rain and managed to serve her two-year-old's birthday cake just in time for the first drops to fall on local sausages with Sir Kensington's ketchup (below left). After all the celebratory guests left and the cold had set in, it was time to stock the freezer with meatballs - a favorite fast lunch for one or two or many (below right).
Stay tuned to future Instagram Challenges. It's a part of our effort to get visual. After all, food is about many things, but the imagery helps us connect to the roots of nourishment and sensory pleasure that hooked us on working with food in the first place.
Speaking of visual, we're also working on some graphic improvements to the site, including a homepage revamp, blog redesign, and the (almost finished) mobile version of the site. We can't wait to share them with you.
Happy almost summer,
Taylor & Dorothy

Haven's Kitchen
We always find it refreshing to talk to a chef. They are exhaustively hard workers with a boundless passion for food. What's not to respect? Especially when they are as honest and practical as Julia about the highs and lows of working in kitchens, and the realities of making a living at it. We can bet the conversation will not end here.
