A SUBTLE SHIFT . . .
We conceived of the idea of Good Food Jobs in 2009, with a desire to help change the world. In our twenty-something-year-old minds, the idea of big, sweeping change seemed like the goal. It could be measured in numbers of jobs, and people, and dollars - each one indicating vast swings in the way that people are living their lives and devoting their dollars.
Today, we are still fans of change 'for the better'. But we also recognize that some of the biggest successes we've had are those that were totally unexpected, and happened outside of the confines of our original concept for GFJ. They came - and continue to come - in the form of complaints or questions. The type of one-to-one correspondence that makes you take pause. The kinds of inquiries or assertions that make you want to say, 'Yikes - that couldn't possibly be MY job.'
But this is where the magic lies. Yes, we're happy for every job that gets successfully filled, just as the tool that we built was designed to do. And we do not actively seek out difficulty or discomfort or strife. But we have made a commitment not to ignore it. Whether it pertains to racism on the blog, toxic work environments, maternity discrimination, low applicant turnout, or something new that we've never encountered. Although we continue to work toward systems - and a world - where these issues don't exist, we know that while they do, we want to address them head on.
It's easy to say, 'That's not my problem.' But what if we said this instead: 'Even though I didn't create the problem, how can I be a part of the solution?'
Cheers,

tidbits...
what we’re reading / listening to / watching / noticing / thinking about / captivated by this Tuesday…
A precursor to being part of the solution is recognizing a problem.
Even if you don't actively create the problem, how can you be a part of the solution?
With this Thanksgiving behind us, the holiday can still provide a way to move forward.
How do we move forward right now? By sharing stories that matter to us. Right now we're highlighting Savi Horne and the Land Loss Prevention Project on our revamped blog, GFJ Stories.
