NICE THINGS PEOPLE SAY
I have nothing but good things to say about your site. Before I got a shot at [my current job], I used to troll Good Food Jobs daily for new internship opportunities. And even though I'm employed now, I still happily look forward to reading your newsletters.

We'll share a little-known fact: traditional restaurant kitchen positions are the hardest ones for us to fill on Good Food Jobs. We think it might be because all of you incredible readers / job seekers are getting creative and diving deep into your interests in sustainable food and food culture. In other words, you're looking beyond the kitchen.
When we were researching colleges, circa the turn of the century, the desire to work in food steered you in one direction only: toward culinary school. These days, more and more people are realizing that there are so many options besides starting as a Line Cook - and that even if you do start there, you may end up a lot of different places, not just as the Executive Chef title at that same restaurant.
And we are truly delighted for that. Food culture, after all, permeates people's daily lives far beyond the restaurant plate. But, as always, we are looking to tell the whole story. And the whole story is that kitchen positions still play an important role in our food system. This week our blog features Kevin Farrell, whose restaurant, Booty's Street Food, is truly revolutionizing what it means to be a restaurant employee. If you're interested in taking a closer look, check out some of the Good Food Jobs online right now that illustrate our point (you can click through to them below, under the Highlights section).
FOR THE FOOD ARTISAN . . .
Kitchen Position / Tired Hand Brewing Company / Philly
At most brew pubs, the food seems to play second fiddle to the beers..but not at Tired Hands. They bake their bread from scratch daily and go to great lengths to highlight local farms. Most importantly, they cultivate a culture of food and beverage lovers. If you are looking to be in a place where you will be surrounded by like-minded individuals that will help you learn and explore your love of food (and beer), then we encourage you to apply.
FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN FOOD FOR SOCIAL GOOD . . .
Kitchen Manager / Project Open Hand / San Francisco
Utilize your kitchen skills to help others. Project Open hand allows you to combine your interest in food and contributing to the community in a truly meaningful way.
FOR CHEFS WHO WANT TO EXPERIMENT OUTSIDE OF THE RESTAURANT . . .
Chef de Cuisine / Dinner Lab / Atlanta (and many other cities)
Working at Dinner Lab is for anyone who wants those that want to tear down the walls of a traditional restaurant kitchen. They operate one-off events (sometimes up to 100 per year in a given city) in different settings, with different menus, and unique eating experiences. They have plenty of other kitchen positions, too (like Sous Chef and Chef de Partie, in various cities).
It turns out that even within the realm of kitchen positions, businesses are getting really creative, and putting out more good food with more meaning than ever. We couldn't be more excited for what's to come.
GFJ OCTOBER INSTAGRAM CHALLENGE
So maybe you're not ready to take the plunge and apply for a kitchen position, but it doesn't mean that you can't experiment in your own kitchen. In honor of Halloween - and the inevitable urge to munch on candy - we are hoping you'll devote your indulgence to homemade treats.
Instagram your hand made creations (think homemade caramels, butterfinger bars, oreos, apple hand pies, and the like . . . see below for some caramel-making inspiration from the GFJ kitchen). And tag your photos with #GFJsugarhigh. The winner with the most likes as of 8 AM on Tuesday, October 29th gets The Cult Classic box of goodies from Liddabit Sweets.
editor's note:
Our most sincere apologies, as last week we listed Mary's Twitter handle as @culinarylibrarian, but it is actually @culinarylibrari (do you see why we put her at the helm of our Twitter account now? Our old school brains spell checked it before sending the newsletter out. Whoops!) We're so sorry about that.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy

Kevin Farrell
Owner / General Manager
Booty's Street Food
Something about Kevin's (and his partner, Nick's) story reminds us of Cinderella. Only this version goes more like: two scrappy young gents scraped their pennies together and built a beautiful, sparkly restaurant in a downtrodden city. And their success - their 'happily ever after' - is built on the foundation that their employees also get a shot at being Cinderella. We dare you not to be impressed with how they're making that happen. Read More
