Good Food Jobs is a gastro-job search tool, designed to link people looking for meaningful food work with the businesses that need their energy, enthusiasm, and intellect. We post opportunities with farmers and food artisans, policy makers and purveyors, retailers and restaurateurs, economists, ecologists, and more.
the gastrognomes is a blog for food lovers who want to put their passions to work. We profile the most interesting, engaging, and unlikely food professionals that we find, and we publish them here to inspire you.

If you're seeking permanent work, keep in mind that, as we ramp up for the holidays, your best bet might be to find opportunities to help in the short term.
Small food businesses - particularly ones that sell gifts or have a mail-order department - are about to encounter their busiest and most lucrative season. While they may not be able to think beyond January 1st (and hence are not often hiring for full-time employment during December) they are often desperately in need of extra hands (and flexible workers) during the holiday season.
Reach out, show up, and learn as much as you possibly can. You may not get payrolled, but you can score a few extra bucks, discounts on products that you can use for your own holiday gift list, and/or the opportunity to get your foot in the door during an otherwise slow hiring period.
And for those of you who already have stable employment, it's time to get cracking on your holiday presents. The best are homemade. Here's a list of DIY edible treats that you can start on ASAP.
Cheers,

SAVE THE NEW DATE
We spoke too soon!
The NYC Department of Education is opening public school on Friday February 22nd to make up for days lost during Hurricane Sandy, and therefore Just Food will no longer be able to host their annual conference during that time.
Therefore, Just Food has moved the conference dates to Friday March 29th - Saturday March 30th, as now reflected on the ticket purchase page.
We're so sorry for any inconvenience. We still hope to see you at the Good Food Jobs Get Together.

Tickets are on sale now for the annual Just Food Conference, where the general public, food professionals, entrepreneurs, job seekers, CSA members, community organizers and farmers come together for two days of workshops and skill-building sessions. Attendees will have opportunities to learn about national farm and food issues, CSA trends, and cooking and food preservation techniques, as well as ways to mobilize communities in order to increase access to farm-fresh, locally grown food.
As a special part of this year’s conference events, don’t miss the Good Food Jobs Get Together, co-hosted by Just Food and GFJ. This networking event will be open to conference participants as well as the job-seeking public – just $5 with your conference ticket, or $20 for this event alone. Great Performances and Edible Publications have already RSVPed, so get your tickets now!

The Farm School & Plough and Stars Project
Look at the legion of folks working in food today and you'll find quite a few adult students getting schooled on how to turn their passion into a career. Because of the high cost of continuing education, and the fact that one still has to make a living - as an individual and maybe as a family - until the tests are passed, programs that offer a lot of learning in a short amount of time are often the best solution. Erik is a great example of someone who is making the most of his year-long studies, by using his talents as a photographer to document the accumulation of new talents in farming. Read More
