A lot has changed in a week; the election is over and a majority of people in the Northeast had their power restored after Superstorm Sandy. You know what they say . . . the more things change, the more they stay the same.
And while our beloved region of the U.S. experienced yet another nor'easter last Wednesday - which gusts may or may not have been one huge collective sigh of relief from the rest of the western world upon hearing the election results - we urge everyone not to stop caring just yet. If this were a marathon, we would not have reached the finish line, but only just been accepted to the race. After all, your work doesn't stop as soon as you land your dream job . . . becoming employed means, inherently, that your work is just beginning.
So while we're happy to hear of the election results (if only for the incessant media coverage to scale back), and we're grateful for power to be restored, our greatest hope is that people will not just 'go back to life as usual'. It's easy to fall back into our comfort zones, hoping that powers beyond our control will keep us safe, warm, and happy. But there are many more issues to be tackled, countless people that need help, and good to be done in the world. While we don't expect any one person to be able to solve every problem, we still believe that small actions on the behalf of large numbers of people can make subtle, but beneficial, changes.
We live in a divided nation, but we have a firm belief that the best things happen when surrounded by a community of people who genuinely care. We find solace in this community that we have helped create - all of you GFJ users out there - but we also find great inspiration. We hope that you do to.
And we urge you to never ever let someone else solve your problems, but rather to put the most faith in the person that has the most control over your own successes (however they be measured) - you. No matter who is president, no matter what mother nature brings to our doorstep, we hope that you are actively changing the world for the better. And we hope that you are sharing this desire with those around you. Together we really can make a difference.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy

A Growing Culture
Carole's story, like everyone else's, is totally unique, but nonetheless you may find that you recognize yourself in it. Many of us have traveled (are traveling) a long and winding road to our dream job, with lots of detours and side jobs along the way. What's exciting about Carole's experience is that she proves how much can be accomplished just by taking action - asking the right questions, making friends with people, and persevering. In fact, she once hosted and interviewed (our idol) Ruth Reichl at home. How did she do it? She just asked . . . Read More
