As the day dawns on a post-hurricane landscape, helplessness is on our minds.
When the power goes out, it's a simple but sobering reminder that we are not in control of the world around us. (Those of you squinting in the light of your cell phones to read this will know the feeling.) When you're standing at the airport reading the flight status screens, and you see the calm white words 'on time' transform to blinking yellow 'cancelled', it's a good opportunity to practice the mantra: you can't fight reality. And while I'm stranded in San Francisco, waiting to find out if I'll be able to fly home to the east coast by the end of the day, the word 'Stuck.' is stuck in my mind.
Many of us know how it feels to be in between jobs, out of a job, or working in a job you don't love (to put it kindly). It's a good time to remember that we're all in this storm together. That's what I was thinking just two days ago (in the calm before the storm) as I looked around a room full of Eat Retreaters who came together to share their passion for working in, and with, food. Sometimes what matters more than knowing what the future holds is knowing that others share your belief about what's truly important.
And in my attempt to follow our own advice of 'keep going', I found a flight from San Francisco to Boston that will take me thousands of miles closer to home and reuinited with my family . . . but not quite there. If anyone is also on en route from Boston to the NY/CT area circa 8 PM this evening, let us know. We might as well ride it out together.
For those affected by this latest storm, your loved ones and neighbors are the most important thing. We at Good Food Jobs are hopeful that each and every one of them is safe and sound.
Cheers,
Dorothy & Taylor

HowGood, Inc.
Food labeling is a hot topic right now, as anyone privy to the heated debate about California's Prop 37 will know. This pair of clever siblings are ahead of the curve with their company, HowGood, which brings transparency to shoppers in a more sophisticated and relevant way than ever before. Relevant, that is, to the issues that matter to savvy food shoppers, including provenance of ingredients and manufacturing processes. It's our favorite California market, Bi-Rite, that says it best: '[It] isn't about politics. It's about transparency.' Read More
