Among the frequently asked questions at GFJ is ‘Where are you based?’
The answer has gotten more complicated than it used to be, when we launched in 2010, and our our apartments were just a short walk from one another in the slopes of Brooklyn. While it only adds just a sentence or two more to the answer to explain that Taylor has moved up to the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, and that we traverse the information highway on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis to stay in touch and keep the website current, that leaves out the Scouts who help us spread the word about GFJ far and wide, from Arizona to New York and sometimes in between.
And furthermore, it leaves out the fact that Good Food Jobs is an international website. Have you ever noticed that little button on our Advanced Search map that says ‘outside of U.S.’? Well, I’ll admit, it’s a small button. But it has a permanent place in our vision for what Good Food Jobs is capable of.
We’d like to think that the rest of the world just hasn’t caught up to us, but the reality is that we have a lot of work ahead to forge a community bigger than our continental boundaries. Rest assured that we are hot on the trail.
In fact, this week Dorothy managed to get from East coast to West coast and back again, as a lucky judge of the third annual Good Food Awards. While the ‘work’ of tasting dozens of deliciously nuanced sea salt caramels (and more!) in the category of Confections might seem trivial, the awards not only celebrate American artisanal food production, they encourage and support its growth. The criteria for entry, over a wide range of categories from beer and charcuterie to chocolate and preserves, raises the bar for sustainable sourcing and production practices. As the number of entries, and judges, has doubled since last year, it is obviously making an impact that we can get behind, even if the sugar headache has lasted a record 48 hours.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy
