Happy May!
We've got two important things to discuss this week: last week's
Facebook Poll results and GFJ's first
Homepage Photo Contest.
POLL RESULTS
If you recall, last week we shared our story of a bump in the social media road. We posted a Facebook Poll to determine your favorite food professional, with the intention of reaching out to the winner of the poll and inviting them to do a live web chat to answer your questions about finding a dream job. When the results were less than stellar, we reached out to you, our loyal readers, to help us give the poll one last try.
As with any experience, our goals are 3-fold:
-
Get a resounding response
-
Learn from the results, and
-
Share what we learned with you.
With another week gone by, the quantity of responses is still not as powerful as we'd hoped (we got a total of 148 final votes), but the
quality was superb. Beyond the votes that were registered directly to the Facebook Poll, we had many folks reach out to us directly via email to give us feedback. Here's what we learned from you:
-
If you ever use Facebook Polls, be sure to choose an application that does NOT require you to access the users' personal information. Many people prefer not to partake under these circumstances, so if you have the option to do so, then forego the privacy issues.
-
NEWS FLASH: not everybody has a Facebook account. It's a great (and free) tool that we can use for a lot of purposes, but analyze all options for maximum campaign effectiveness (or better yet, use FB to supplement a campaign, instead of house it).
-
Don't be afraid to repeat yourself. We're all bombarded with words and images all day. We're not recommending that you add to the noise, but don't be afraid to repeat the same message - in multiple ways - through multiple media outlets - in order to grab people's attention.
We obviously haven't mastered the world of social media yet, but we're happy to experiment - and to share our successes and learn from our failures together.
Now I'm sure you're all wondering who actually won the poll. With 44% of the total votes, the winner is (drumroll please . . . ) ALICE WATERS (with Ruth Reichl in close second). As promised, we'll reach out to see if we can convince her to do a live chat. Stay tuned for further details.
