Happy Monday?
We often share our successes with you, but it's just as important to share our failures.
Last week we had a grand scheme: participate in our Facebook Poll to determine your favorite food professional, and we would reach out to the winner of the poll and entice them to do a web chat with us to answer any and all questions you have about finding your dream job.
We had wisely chosen 4 of our favorite food idols:
-
Danny Meyer (Founder of Union Square Hospitality Group)
-
Gary Vaynerchuck (Founder of Wine Library TV & VaynerMedia)
-
Ruth Reichl (Author & Editor)
-
Alice Waters (Owner of Chez Panisse & Sustainable Food Advocate)
We did this in hopes of reaching out to the winner and saying, "We had 42,861 people say that you have their dream job. Might you be willing to hop online for an hour and answer their questions about how you made it to where you are today?"
We thought it would be an overnight sensation, thanks to some extra ad exposure, but sadly, we only got 13 responses (4 of which were from friends of ours). Oops.
But we're not deterred. We'll keep the poll up for another few days just in case you want to participate. A promise is a promise, and we are still going to reach out to the winner, just in case they will indeed indulge our fantasy to have them career coach everyone for just one hour. But we assure you - we'll have much more pull if we have more votes (who doesn't want to hear that they have tens of thousands of adoring fans who believe in what they do?).
You can only vote once, and we have just over 9,000 people on this newsletter list (41% of which consistently open their GFJ email), so any help that you can give in posting it to your FB wall, tweeting it out, forwarding this email to your food loving friends or otherwise, is greatly appreciated. Let's see what sort of damage we can all do together.

PALESTINE FARM PROJECT
preserving the (agri)cultural knowledge and traditions of the West Bank
We're fortunate to come across phenomenal food projects daily, and this one is no exception. Inspired by the US ingenuity in promoting sustainable food, Founder Mosab Qashoo established the Palestine Farm Project to bring some of these methods back to his society to support the farming communities there, while preserving, celebrating and sharing the agricultural traditions he grew up with.
At PFP visitors and family farmers work side-by-side, helping to preserve traditional Palestinian (agri)cultural knowledge and promote economically and ecologically sustainable development (and provide an alternative to tourism dollars landing in the pockets of multinational corporations).
To get the project off the ground they are looking for some help. Should you want to donate your design skills, help with fundraising, or simply be the first to stay there, contact PFP at palestinefarmproject@gmail.com.
If you are as interested in the project as we are, learn more at http://palestinefarmproject.wordpress.com/

THE GASTRO.GNOMES BLOG
Simon Huntley
Owner & Lead Developer
Small Farm Central
We come across a lot of people who feel that they don’t have the skills or experience to work in the food world. But our mantra is that you don’t have the work WITH food to work IN food, and you likely have plenty of expertise that can elevate the small sustainable businesses dotting the landscape. Don’t trade in your Photoshop, Quickbooks, coding (or other fill-in-the-blank skills) just yet. Simon is a shining example. Simon started Small Farm Central, a website devoted to helping farmers create a beautiful, functional online presence – something that often falls by the wayside in an occupation that devotes so much physical and mental energy to other priorities. The best part is that Simon found a way to do it systematically, so it’s both fast and affordable. And as anyone who has ever created a website for his or her business knows, those are truly vital issues. Read More
