Happy April,
We appreciate the countless responses that we got to last week's inquiries regarding your interests in food writing. We're forever indebted, as we used a lot of the questions to shape the materials for our lecture at Boston University on Saturday (see below for some answers to your burning questions).
An additional thanks to the following food writing professionals, who kindly contributed to our research:
So what was the most uplifting thing to learn about food writing? Gone are the days when food writing only means restaurant reviews, recipes, or coveted articles that are few and far between. Get creative! There are various formats (blog, online journal, magazine, newspaper, book, business) and an interest in so many different subjects (think agricultural issues, artisan foods, food policy, home cooking, canning, and dozens more) that there is pretty much no excuse for you not to make your dream job (or at least your dream hobby) a reality.
We look forward to reading your writing soon,

FOOD WRITING
HINTS, TIPS, TRICKS, AND WORDS OF WISDOM
Here are some highlights from our talk at Boston University:
-
Writing gets easier with practice. You must be persistent and you must be prolific; that is, you must continue to write even if you aren't getting published.
-
Take a class: If one's bold enough, s/he can probably make some important connections in the class, but it’s also just a good space for structured practice, with deadlines and project assignments.
-
A career in food writing is not easy, but if you're really persistent, you can bust in. One of the things I wish I'd been told is how big a part of writing rejection is. You have to have thick skin and persistence! And you’ve got to just love writing.
-
Reach out and find a mentor, talk to anyone and everyone, get experience -- expertise, even, if you can, especially in some particular niche subject (cheesemaking, classical French pastries, Balkan cuisines, hydroponic agriculture, etc.), and work your way up. Get an internship. Write for small publications or for free to get lots of clips under your belt.
-
Be humble and curious. Don't expect to get a book deal from your blog -- but keep a blog, so that you can write. Write, write, write.
If you're interested in more information (specifically on the process of getting published), we've got it. Email us for the detailed 3-page handout at info@goodfoodjobs.com.

THE GASTRO.GNOMES BLOG
Erin Carlman Weber
Editorial Intern
Leite's Culinaria
We have yet to devise a formal system for tracking how many people find Good Food Jobs on our site, but we're always excited when someone reaches out to us to say that they're gainfully employed, thanks to our job posts. Erin is another happy ending - or happy middle, given that she's got a bright future ahead of her - that we can't take all the credit for. Erin's persistence and passion landed her some coveted spots in the Boston area, and she's exemplifying the strategy of taking a part-time good food job (which pays) in order to support her good food internship (which doesn't).
