  • Date Posted February 16, 2019
  • Location South Royalton, VT
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Luna Bleu Farm is a well established diversified certified organic farm in central Vermont, growing high quality food for our community for 30 years. On our 42 acre farm, we grow 5 acres of vegetables, raise cattle, pigs, and chickens for egg and meat production, and have a small orchard with blueberries, apples, and plums. We grow and market year-round through our CSA, Saturday farmers market, and a few local businesses. Season extension and winter growing in high tunnels is an expanding part of our operation. We work hands-on with our employees to share the knowledge we have gained over our years of farming and encourage employees to take advantage of the rich agricultural opportunities in the Upper Valley of Vermont. We are relatively small in size, but our diversity with crops and animals means we have lots of fun every day!

Job description

Luna Bleu Farm is seeking Assistant Managers, Full and Part-Time Crew, and Whole-Farm Apprentices

Assistant Managers
We are seeking one or two full-time Assistant Managers with 2+ seasons of farm production experience.  Flexible start date February- early April preferred. This position goes through the third week of November. Options available to work through the winter, a second season, and continued growth in farm management.

Assistant Managers will be involved with all aspects of our farming operation, but will take a leadership role in one of the following areas:

  • Harvest/Washroom Management – Organize and manage daily harvest, quality control, order fulfillment, preparation of produce for farmers’ market and CSA. Maintain washroom cleanliness and order, and develop protocols to increase efficiency. Implement food safety guidelines. Maintain records.
  • Field Production Management– Organize and manage successive seedings and transplantings in the field, cultivation schedule and priorities, field irrigation, diseases and pests. Maintain records.
  • Greenhouse Production Management – Focus mainly on summer greenhouse tomato production: planting, trellising, pruning, irrigation, disease and pest management, harvest, record keeping. Organize and manage conversion of other greenhouses from spring greens, to summer fallow, to preparation for winter planting.

Assistant managers will work with the farmers to develop protocols in the area of management. Assistant managers will, at times, be crew leaders; guiding other employees and volunteers. Assistant managers are not expected to have previous experience in managing or even extensive experience in the area chosen. We will train and guide assistant managers and help troubleshoot problems. We have lots of experience but we are always open to new ideas.  This position is best suited for a self-motivated person who wants to pursue a career in farming.

Full-time and Part-Time Crew
Typical season runs April-May until October-November, but we will consider other start and end times. In general, farm crew participate in most aspects of our farming operation: rotating through the various animal chores, working with many aspects of growing, harvesting, and marketing the field vegetables and fruits and helping with the CSA distribution and farmers market. Applicants with more experience may also take on roles with more responsibility. It is also possible for a part-time employee to have a more limited scope of farm activities.

Whole-Farm Apprentice
Flexible start date: mid February- early May preferred.   Preference given to applicants who can stay through main growing season into November.  Successful apprentices are given the option to work through winter season and/or return the following season as an Assistant Manager.

The Whole Farm Apprentice is exposed to all aspects of our farming operation: rotating through the various animal chores, working with many aspects of growing, harvesting, and marketing the field vegetables and fruits and helping with the CSA distribution and farmers market. You will get a broad experience of the rhythms of the farming season and the many elements of our farming systems.

Much of the learning is hands-on during the day-to-day tasks required on our farm.  Apprentices participate in the Upper Valley Craft program and are encouraged to attend on-farm workshops during the summer to enhance their education on the farm. Apprentices play an integral role in running our farm. We hope to give them skills, experiences and even connections to further their work in this field.

Apprentices will be involved with…

  • Seeding, transplanting, weeding, and harvesting vegetable crops
  • Post-harvest washing and prepping for market
  • Animal chores and grazing rotations
  • Chicken processing
  • CSA and farmers market
  • Greenhouse watering and field irrigation
  • Record keeping
  • Mowing, BCS rototilling
  • Food safety
  • Season extension

Starting pay compensation for assistant manager and full and part-time farm crew positions commensurate with experience. We have a joint evaluation with possibility of increase after 3 months. CSA share plus organic meat/egg allowance based on hours worked.

We offer apprentices room, board and a stipend beginning at $400/week with a review after the first 3 months.
