Company description Cross Street Flower Farm is a 7-acre flower farm in Norwell, MA at the historic Jacobs Farm.  We are located 30 minutes south of Boston and 5 miles from the ocean. Started in 2015, we grow over 50 varieties of specialty cut flowers using organic methods. We have a 150-member flower CSA, sell wholesale to florists, one farmer’s market and a limited number of weddings and on-farm events. This season, we are also going to grow a small selection of vegetables for our farm stand, for wholesale and to donate to the local food pantry. Apprentice Program– 2019 Season

This is our 5th growing season together, and this is the 2nd year of our apprentice program. We started our apprentice program last season to allow us to share our love of flower farming and to help train aspiring flower farmers.

Our apprentices are an integral part of our team and learn all aspects of flower farming – from fieldwork, to harvest and post-harvest handling of flowers, design work and so much more. This year we are also expanding into limited vegetable production, so our apprentices will learn to grow vegetables as well as flowers.

We are tailoring our apprentice program to build into a 2-year position, for candidates that may be interested in staying two years. The first year will be a generalized track learning all facets of farming and the second year we will work with the apprentices to design their season’s work based on their skills and interests.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in all areas of field work including, but not limited to: bed preparation, 
transplanting, irrigation set up and monitoring, fertilizing, disease and pest scouting and 
managing, weeding, 

  • Greenhouse work, including, seeding, potting up, watering, 

  • Harvest & Post Harvest Handling of Cut Flowers – learn the systems we use to properly 
harvest each flower variety and 

  • Learn to operate all farm equipment (tractor with implements and bcs) and drive delivery 
vehicles 

  • Work at and eventually manage our CSA pickup, farm stand and deliveries
Qualifications:
  • 2-3 years farming experience is desired, though not required, as is one's own vehicle and a 
valid drivers license. 

  • Important qualities here include: a positive attitude, willingness to work and try hard, good 
verbal communication skills and physical health 

  • Strong work ethic, flexibility, and ability to work on a small team under deadlines 

  • A love of flowers, farming, and working outdoors in all types of weather. We work rain or 
 

  • Interest in gaining lots of hands-on instruction and responsibility in all aspects of the farm's operation from fieldwork to bouquet arrangement, marketing, farmers markets, infrastructure training, and how to run a small business. 

Schedule: This is a full-time position for the growing season, beginning in early April through November. Our daily schedule will change as the season progresses, but our apprentices can expect to work 6 days and approximately 40 hours a week in the height of the season from mid-June to mid-October – our daily schedule ramps up and down in the shoulder season, spring and fall. Our summer and fall schedule is usually 6am to 2pm.

Compensation: There is a monthly stipend of $1,250 -$1,500 based on experience, plus 5 vacation days and a stipend for health insurance. There is currently no housing on the farm, so applicants must live within commuting distance to Norwell, MA.
