Colfax Farm operates on a retired dairy farm, utilizing 2 acres for organic production. There is an emphasis on practices that protect and nourish the soil, with very little heavy machinery. We try to make decisions about the farm with the soil and environment in the forefront of our minds. Job description Colfax Farm is looking for full and part time farm crew members for the 2019 season. The season will begin on April 15 and last until the end of October, Monday through Friday. There will be the occasional Saturday shifts as well (1-2 per month). Workdays will begin at 7:30 and end at 4:30, with a half hour lunch break in the late afternoon. A snack will be provided during our midmorning break. Depending on your experience and enthusiasm, pay will begin at $12/hr and scale up to $14/hr. Please have a valid driver license and your own transportation. At this time, the farm is unable to provide housing, so please take this into account.
Tasks will include, but are not limited to:
- weeding, planting, seeding, raking, hoeing, heavy lifting ( but not alone! and not over 50lbs), mulching, harvesting, washing and packing vegetables, helping at market (TBD)
I am hoping to provide a fun learning experience at my farm. I like to work hard, but I am not interested in feeling overworked. I will provide moments to stretch and reflect, to take care of the body and mind while we move through our work day. I would be happy to have crew members with experience but it is not necessary. I would like to work with folks who have a good work ethic, enjoy being outside, have a good attitude and look to the bright side of things. I want to share what I have learned as a farmer so far, and to share what things we can learn together in the upcoming season. The farm is based on a small-scale, high productivity model, using mostly hand tools and very little tractor work. If you are interested in learning how to scale back from fossil fuel practices, this is the place for you. I am implementing many new strategies in the upcoming season, and I am very excited to share what I am doing with like minded would-be farmers. I would like Colfax Farm to be a place where young new farmers can learn a sustainable way of farming, not just in the practices we use to grow our produce, but how we take care of ourselves as farmers/human beings as well.
There will also be opportunities to visit other farms in the Berkshire and Hudson Valley regions as well. It is important to stay connected with fellow farmers, share ideas and to remain inspired about what we do. Compensation this position is : hourly, varies DOE, $12.00 - $14.00 Work visa This employer is willing to sponsor a work visa for international applicants Application instructions
