Marketing/Sensory Taste Panel Intern California Olive Oil Council

Job Description The California Olive Oil Council (COOC) would like to announce the opportunity for a part-time internship beginning late October/early November 2015.   This is a paid position of approximately 14-18 hours per week. 

The California Olive Oil Council is a trade association with the mission of encouraging the consumption of certified California extra virgin olive oil through education, outreach and communications. The COOC is committed to upholding the highest standards within the olive oil industry through its Seal Certification Program, which certified over 300 oils as extra virgin in 2015. 

A member-based organization, the COOC represents over 90% of the olive oil growers and producers from the state of California. Throughout the year, the COOC conducts education and outreach to promote the California olive oil industry through events and trade shows. Additionally, the COOC upholds its strict allegiance to maintaining quality standards throughout the industry with the Seal Certification Program. Through this program, all COOC member producers must submit a sample of their oil each harvest year to ensure that it meets criteria to be marketed as “extra virgin,” the highest grade an olive oil may receive. 

This COOC intern will work closely with staff to help with the preparation and administration of the COOC taste panel, the certifying body for the Seal Certification Program. Intern will have the opportunity to learn about olive oil sensory science, in addition to gaining a thorough understanding of the range of California olive oils and their adherence to quality standards. 

Additionally, intern will assist with the implementation of marketing initiatives and campaigns as needed. This includes preparation for activities such as olive oil media dinners, tastings and trade shows. 

Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent work experience preferred. Schedule is flexible, however candidate must have availability on Thursdays. The COOC is a non-profit organization with a small staff, so the ideal candidate will be flexible in the completion of a variety of tasks. Position has potential to become a part-time paid staff position after a duration of six months. 

Intern will assist the COOC staff with duties including: 
  • Collection and tracking of olive oil samples and Seal Certification paperwork
  • Preparation of Seal Certification result charts-Sharing, tracking and updating of COOC social media
  • Communication of COOC goals and programs along with distribution of COOC marketing materials
  • Preparation for varying olive oil education and tasting events 

Intern should have an interest in pursuing a career in agricultural marketing and communications and should demonstrate: 
  • Diligent organizational skills with an attention to detail-Team leadership
  • Strong communication skills
  • An interest in agriculture and the California olive oil industry
  • Valid Driver’s License
