  • Location Edmonton, Alberta, CA
  • Category Design / Education

Job Description About Us:

The West End Food Hub Alliance (WEFHA) is a project that reflects innovative directions in addressing food insecurity, and whose vision is “Neighbourhoods where food is a driving connector for learning, sharing, and celebrating together. The food and the ways in which we access it are healthy for our bodies, our communities and the earth”.

We are taking a multifaceted and long-term approach to hunger and food insecurity in ten neighbourhoods in the west-end of Edmonton. We will focus on the entire system that puts food on community members’ tables: from the growing, processing and distribution of food to its purchasing, cooking and consumption.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for an energetic, passionate individual with neighbourhood-based organizing experience in diverse communities. This will be an exciting opportunity for applicants who are dedicated to food-related activism and are interested in working to develop and ‘grow’ this new and innovative initiative. We are also recruiting for a part-time Distribution and Access Coordinator. These two positions will work together. The full job descriptions are available at https://jpwc.ca

This is a 16 hrs/week position involving a combination of day, evening and weekend work. The position is available as soon as suitable candidate is found.

The position will involve:
  • Building on the current Yard Share Program or create a new initiative supporting community members to grow food engaging at least 8 households.
  • Create an apprenticeship or internship training project related to growing food.
  • Establish 2 composting sites within alliance boundaries.
  • Host one intergenerational activity with children, youth, and adults centered on food.
  • Host at least two cooking classes using food gleaned from stores, gardens, trees and bushes in the neighborhood that engage 30 community members, from at least 4 neighborhoods within alliance boundaries.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma or related experience.
  • Minimum of three years of community-based experience including working with people with limited access to food and/or community support.
  • Experience working collaboratively with and managing others, including community members, volunteers, groups, networks, committees/boards and organizations.
  • Experience with train-the-trainer programs, coaching or peer-tutoring.
  • Experience in community food initiatives and urban agriculture would be an asset.
  • Ability to take initiative and assume responsibility with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to effectively solve problems, conflicts and/or disputes
  • Knowledge of food security principles and programs.
  • Knowledge of agencies and communities within the Alliance boundary areas would be an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, maturity and sensitivity to individuals and conditions in different cultural and organizational contexts.
  • Strong consulting, group facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Computer literacy for word processing, database, email and internet systems.
