Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) was founded in 2006 as an independent non-governmental organization (NGO) capable of breaking new ground in the world of sustainable seafood and marine and freshwater conservation.

Our vision is one of healthy marine and aquatic ecosystems; secure seafood supplies; and a thriving, responsible seafood economy.

Our mission is to engage and catalyze global seafood supply chains in rebuilding depleted fish stocks and reducing the environmental impacts of fishing and fish farming.

The Opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced (3+ years) fundraising professional to join our team as a Development Associate. The responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to: identifying potential funders for SFP's work around the world; working with SFP programs to produce proposals for foundations, government and development agencies, and other funders; ensuring a smooth and successful proposal submission process; working closely with internal and external program stakeholders; delivering accurate and timely reporting; and representing the organization to funders and other external audiences as required. SFP has grown significantly since its founding in 2006, and now requires additional fundraising expertise to support our programs around the globe. This full-time position will work closely with all of SFP's staff, including: project implementors, fisheries management specialists, scientfic advisors, and our buyer engagement team. SFP is a geographically distributed organization with staff working across the globe and with no central or regional offices. Due to the virtual nature of the organization, this position requires a candidate who is highly effective at working independently, is sensitive to other cultures, and can coordinate with colleagues world-wide. It is envisaged that this position will be primarily responsible for the following activities, as well as other development related work as required.

Foundations
  • Identifying and cultivating funding opportunities among mid- and small-sized foundations awarding grants in the range of $50,000 to $500,000. This will include outreach and relationship building with program officers in foundations with mandates to fund issues around marine conservation, the environment, food security, sustainable development, transparency, accountability, etc.
  • Preparing new and renewal proposals to foundations in collaboration with program and finance staff.
  • Reporting to donors, working closely with the CFO, Director of Development, Director of Foundation Relations, and Director of Monitoring & Evaluation to ensure donor reporting is thorough and timely, the position will require coordination of program staff to gather program results, prepare donor narrative reports, integrate financial reporting, prepare completed reports, and deliver these to donors.
Development sector funders
  • Researching the applicability of SFP's model to development agency and multilateral funder priorities.
  • Preparing new and renewal proposals to funders.
  • Reporting to donors.
Work with the Development Team to assess and revise SFP's fundraising strategy
  • Developing strategies for engaging foundations.
  • Working with SFP's CEO, Development Director, Director of Foundation Relations, and program staff to identify fundraising priorities and maintaining an up-to-date roster of fundraising priorities and opportunities.
Qualifications:
  • Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of other languages helpful
  • 3+ years experience fundraising from foundations, development agencies, etc.
  • Established connections to conservation or environmental funders
  • Persuasive written and oral presentation skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and a donor management database software such as Raiser's Edge or Salesforce
  • Knowledge of conservation or fisheries an advantage
  • Located in or around Washington, DC, or Portland, OR, USA (SFP cannot provide support for relocating)
Travel, Working Hours:

This full-time position will require occasional travel to meet with funders, represent SFP at events, and participate in organizational planning meetings. As a global organization, SFP must often schedule telephone communications at times suitable for geographically dispersed participants in different time zones. The ideal candidate will be able to observe flexible work patterns and work outside of regular office hours when necessary.
