Prison Program Manager Insight Garden Program

Job Description About Us:

As a nationally recognized and evidence-based program working with people in prison, IGP facilitates a transformative curriculum combined with experiential gardening to reduce recidivism and create healthier, safer, and more resilient communities. IGP fosters an inside-out approach to change through vocational gardening and landscaping, as well as life skills development that empower participants to successfully reenter society.

The program helps to break the cycle of incarceration though learning approaches from neuroscience both in the classroom and in flower and vegetable gardens. Its holistic model provides: 1) an ecological and systems view of life; 2) permaculture vegetable and flower skills and active gardening; 3) "inner gardening" behavioral tools to build emotional intelligence; and 4) life and work skills focused on accountability, responsibility, teamwork and leadership.

Position Description:

IGP's Prison Program Manager at San Quentin State Prison will be responsible for handling class logistics in the prison, managing volunteers, and helping successfully administer the program on Friday afternoons in the prison's medium security prison yard. The IGP PM will also have solid facilitation skills and will be able to lead or co-facilitate classes on Friday afternoons at least twice a month. The position requires a dynamic person who can navigate complex systems, has good negotiation and communication skills, as well as great attention to detail and program management experience. In-prison experience working with incarcerated people, specifically at San Quentin, is preferred. This is a part-time position, averaging 8-10 hours/week.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Relationship-Building:
  • Develop relationships with key prison stakeholders (e.g., Associate Warden, Lieutenants, Sergeants, officers and yard officers) and become familiar with the prison's chain of command
  • Develop relationship with Central Services Associate Warden, Captain, and Secretary for materials clearances
  • Develop close working relationship with Community Partnership Manager (who oversees IGPs work in the prison) to run personnel clearances and other logistics
  • Lead or co-facilitate class at least 2-3 times/month (Friday afternoons)
  • Understands core IGP philosophies; attend IGP's training
  • Demonstrates strong facilitation skills, including managing group dynamics
  • Have some content experience in any or all of the following: gardening, environmental issues, science, food-farming-urban agriculture, etc.
  • If approved by IGP Founder/Director and the institution, apply for and attend brown card training. This includes filling out all appropriate departmental paperwork; getting TB test completed prior to training
Gate Clearances:
  • Run gate clearances and stay on top of expiring gate clearances
  • Follow-up with appropriate prison personnel to ensure people are cleared for classes (at least 2-3 days in advance of visit)
Materials Clearances:
  • Be familiar with and implement all clearance processes and donation forms for materials and equipment (from curriculum coursework, textbooks, and handouts and possibly garden tools)
  • Send clearances to Central Services within appropriate timeframe for approval and do follow up to ensure that clearances are at gates
  • Ensure materials are appropriately inventoried in and out of prison as necessary
Scheduling Classes:
  • Do outreach to volunteer staff to determine scheduling for each semester (ahead of that semester) – keep class schedules updated on Google docs
  • Several days before class, confirm with volunteers or visitors that they will be in attendance
IGP Administrative:
  • Timely response on emails/texts from ED (within one business day)
  • Use project management system (Asana) for regular communication, scheduling, and task lists.
  • Use Google docs to track all program documentation
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Passion for IGP's mission and vision
  • Excellent communications, relationship management and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working within corrections or with an organization working within a prison
  • Ability to coordinate complex logistics and great attention to detail
  • Respect for prison authority and ability to manage potentially challenging situations
  • Ability to brainstorm and collaborate closely with prison officials
  • Regular mindfulness practice
  • Flexibility and patience
  • Solid facilitation skills
  • Familiarity with Google docs, project management tools (like Asana), and suite of Microsoft Office products
