Job Description About Green Mountain Farm-to-School

Green Mountain Farm-to-School (GMFTS) is a nonprofit organization promoting the health and wellbeing of Vermont's children, farms and communities by providing programs to connect schools and farms through food and education. In the 2015-2016 academic year, GMFTS aims to serve school communities in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont with school gardens, educational programming and fresh local farm foods, benefiting over 5,000 students. Position Description

The primary responsibilities of the Nutrition and Agriculture Educator will be to develop, grow, present, and evaluateGMFTS’ nutrition education programs for the Lunchbox Mobile Food Truck, retail locations, and schools.  This is a full-time, year-long AmeriCorps position. The Nutrition and Agriculture Educator will:
  • Develop and deliver cooking demos, taste tests, and educational workshops for kids and community members
  • Support the Lunchbox’s special events including on-farm dinners and local food festivals
  • Encourage local food purchasing by retailers and schools
  • Coordinate and maintain school gardens
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with GMFTS school and farm partners; Serve as the primary contact for 2-4 schools
  • Create lesson plans for programming and maintain educational materials
  • Design outreach and publicity materials including monthly e-newsletters
  • Use database to collect, analyze, and report data for program evaluation
  • Work closely with staff, parents, food service directors, and farmers
  • Conduct community outreach efforts to raise awareness about healthy foods
  • Recruit and train community volunteers
  • Provide general support to organization, as necessary

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of local food systems and sustainable agriculture
  • Strong interest in working with children, teaching (formal or non-formal) experience required 
  • Culinary experience preferred
  • Some knowledge of gardening and vegetable production helpful, but not necessary.
  • Excellent public speaking, writing skills, and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly growing non-profit environment
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
 Compensation

AmeriCorps Members who complete their term of service in a full-time position will receive:
  • A biweekly stipend totaling $14,620.00 for the year
