Community Gardens Assistant The Stop Community Food Centre

Job Description About Us:

The Stop Community Food Centre began over 30 years ago as one of North America’s first food banks, and has grown into a vibrant community centre, using food as a gateway to addressing many issues, including poverty, the environment, social isolation and health. The Stop runs an urban agriculture program at several sites in the Davenport West and Wychwood Heights neighbourhoods of Toronto, which include vegetable gardens, a greenhouse, and naturalized gardens.

Position Description:

We are looking for an individual to assist in our Urban Agriculture team in maintaining the gardens, involving members of the community (volunteers, program participants, vulnerable adults, seniors, and youths) and delivering programming.

Responsibilities:

Assist the Urban Agriculture Team in the following tasks:
  • Spring seedling production in our Greenhouse
  • Preparing and designing promotional and outreach materials for our community gardens
  • Co-facilitate drop-in and work-bee sessions at Earlscourt Garden
  • Support community garden members in garden maintenance tasks (planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, composting, etc.)
  • Additional garden maintenance as needed
  • Conduct outreach, promote garden projects and lead tours for visitors and groups
  • Assist in organizing community events and field trips
  • Conduct program evaluations and maintain records
  • Assist in food preparation and clean-up after drop-in sessions
Qualifications:
  • Experience working in gardens and using organic garden methods (through paid employment or volunteer work)
  • Commitment to social justice and knowledge of food system issues
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Facilitation experience
  • Ability to work as a team and independently
  • Demonstrated ability living and/or working in communities that experience poverty and discrimination
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds)
  • Ability to speak a language relevant to the neighbourhood is an asset (e.g. Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Hungarian or other)
  • Food Handler certificate and/or First Aid training an asset
  • Holding a valid Ontario driver’s license is an asset
  • Some evenings and weekends required
The successful candidate must be willing to undergo a police check in order to work with youth.

Salary: $16.25 /hour Hours: 37.5 hours/week
