The Food & Environment Reporting Network, Inc., is an independent, non-profit news organization that produces investigative reporting on food, agriculture, and environmental health. Position Description:

The Food & Environment Reporting Network (FERN) is seeking a highly skilled Development Coordinator to assist the Executive Director in all aspects of FERN's fundraising efforts. Reporting to the Executive Director and working with the editorial staff as needed, the Development Coordinator will help to identify and research individual, corporate and foundation prospects, will facilitate communication with donors and sponsors, will manage the gift acknowledgement and stewardship process, and will coordinate all fundraising events and other special events as needed. He/she will ensure that the highest quality of service is provided to all donors and partners. Applicant must be based in or around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (can be remote). Compensation commensurate with experience.

Principal Responsibilities:
  • Manage individual donor membership system, including membership mailing and donor acknowledgement
  • Create and maintain accurate database records for all donors, prospects, and funding opportunities
  • Generate reports from FERN's database and assist with general analysis of data
  • Track proposal and reporting deadlines for all grants
  • Manage the gift acknowledgement program, including acknowledgement letters and other correspondence
  • Assist Executive Director with major donor fundraising
  • Assist Executive Director with corporate and foundation fundraising as requested including writing grants and grant reports
  • Identify and research new corporate, foundation and individual major gift prospects
  • Coordinate mailings for all donor communications
  • Correspond with current and prospective donors by phone, mail and e-mail and organize donor meetings as directed by Executive Director
  • Work with the Executive Director to develop a comprehensive donor relations/stewardship plan that provides effective stewardship and identifies new opportunities for engaging donors and strengthening their relationship with FERN
  • Assist with the coordination of logistics for donor dinners, special events, board and donor meetings
  • Provide general support to Executive Director, examples include logging donor information, compiling funder packets, researching grant deadlines, etc.
  • Coordinate and implement FERN's social media fundraising efforts
Desired Skills and Abilities:
  • Good organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks and roles, patiently and professionally
  • Ability to communicate effectively with multiple audiences ranging from FERN staff and board to corporate, foundation, and individual donors
  • Capable of working as a member of a team and independently
  • Excellent proofreading and writing skills
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Docs/Spreadsheet
  • Experience managing corporate social media accounts
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two years of work experience in a nonprofit setting or in sales and marketing with a for-profit company
