Logistics Coordinator The Shore Soup Project
- Date Posted October 23, 2014
- Location New York, NY
- Category Business / Nonprofit
- Job Type Part-Time
In response to the devastation from Hurricane Sandy, The Shore Soup Project developed as a community-based food relief initiative. In the six months after the storm, a network of 400 volunteers helped us deliver over 50,000 healthy hot meals to the homebound, displaced and economically struggling Rockaway residents.
As the long-term Sandy recovery continues, our ongoing mission is to build sustainable community by providing access to healthy, locally-sourced food to the people of Rockaway, regardless of their ability to pay. We aim to address the issues of food insecurity in Rockaway, which have been exacerbated by Hurricane Sandy, and to create a positive impact on our local food chain, economy, and environment. In order to support these efforts, we have developed a sustainable approach that focuses on social enterprise, in which we sell our seasonal, organic soup in New York markets. Every bottle of Shore Soup sold pays for two free bottles to be donated to vulnerable populations within the greater NY community. In addition to free meal distribution, the proceeds from the retail program fund our other community development programs, including farmers markets, community farms, CSA’s, nutrition workshops. For more detailed program information, see www.shoresoupproject.org.
