Ranch Manager Ulatis Creek Ranch

  • Date Posted October 22, 2014
  • Location Vacaville, CA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job Type Full-Time
Job Description We are a 200+ acre ranch just outside the city limits of Vacaville, CA.  Our family just bought the property within the last few years and we're finally ready to start breathing new life into it!  We believe this location gives us a great opportunity to develop our ranch to really become a vibrant part of our local community and an example of the best practices of sustainable agriculture, permaculture and regenerative soil and crop management systems.

Historically the ranch has been growing sudan grass, oats and rye.  We'd like to find a Ranch Manager that has experience designing and working at other sustainable farming operations to help us design and implement a plan for the ranch that will incorporate fruit and nut orchards, vegetables, pastures, chickens, lambs, and heritage pigs.

In addition to the farming operations, and in support of our goal to become a vibrant part of the community, we would like to build a barn and create a suitable area for events - weddings, concerts, etc.  We also may incorporate some U-pick options, a pumpkin patch, on-farm butchery demos, a CSA program, etc., to get the local community on the farm and more connected to where their food comes from.

There are a lot of opportunities in this role to contribute to the big picture thinking but this will also be a very hands-on job.  There is currently only one part-time ranch hand on staff, so most of the work will be done by you and the owners at first, during this early development phase.   The Ranch Manager will need to be comfortable operating farm equipment, performing general maintenance tasks, building and maintaining fencing, setting up irrigation systems, and building ranch infrastructure, running a livestock program, among all the other daily tasks at the ranch.

Staff will be added as needed, and they would report up to the Ranch Manager, so experience managing diverse teams will be important.  Experience designing and managing an internship program is also something we would like to see in an ideal candidate.

Salary will be depending on experience.  Please apply by submitting your resume through this posting.  We'd really like to find a candidate that has similar values and shares our vision so please feel free to tell us what's important to you as you apply - this will really help us find the right match!  Thank you for reading about and considering our opportunity!
