Chief Operating Officer Wholesome Wave

Job Description Position
Wholesome Wave has been growing steadily over the last seven years and it is now looking for the right individual to provide operational leadership to continue building the right foundation to help take the organization through the next level of growth. The Board of Directors, CEO and Executive Team are looking for a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic and process-minded Chief Operating Officer, with experience taking small, nimble organizations and scaling for growth, and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse and talented individuals. 

The Chief Operating Officer will have operational responsibility for the organization and will manage Directors and department heads, as well as be a conduit between the employees and the CEO. As such, this individual must be an experienced operator who is able to help others deliver measurable, organized, effective and mission aligned results, both within their respective departments and across the organization as a whole. To be successful, the COO must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment, while balancing out the requirements and limitations inherent in a non-profit organization. 

Reporting to the CEO, and working closely with the Executive Team and department Directors, the Chief Operating Officer will lead all internal operations and have the following responsibilities:

Responsibilities

Strategic Plan Implementation

•    In partnership with the CEO and Executive Team, inform and help implement the organization’s newly developed 3-5 year strategic plan
•    Oversee, support and develop the internal systems, processes and procedures needed to function effectively and efficiently 

Internal Leadership
•    Provide for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence and support an open-door policy
•    Develop and implement training programs to expand the capacity and enhance the professional development of all staff
•    Facilitate positive and open communication across all levels and departments of the organization

Financial Oversight and Development

•    Ensure the continued financial viability of Wholesome Wave’s departments through sound fiscal management, develop financial reporting tools in conjunction with the Director of Finance
•    In combination with the Director of Finance, report to the Board of Directors on financial matters
•    Coordinate the annual operations action plan and budget, manage effectively within the budget and through any funding constraints, and report accurately on progress made
•    Oversee the accounting systems and functions needed to provide the organization with the quick access to financial information necessary to enable strategic budgeting  

Oversee, Develop and Support, in collaboration with the Office & HR Manager:

•    Active cultivation of the organizations core values and positive culture
•    HR systems and functions as needed, to include; performance management and development, record keeping, staff evaluation, team development, training, recruiting, compensation and employee relations
•    IT and technology needs to ensure systems are up-to-date and sufficient to facilitate the smooth and timely flow of information, communication and operational efficacy

Qualifications
•    Minimum BS/BA degree
•    10+ years experience and proven track record as a Director of Operations or Chief Operating Officer at either a non-profit or for-profit organization with greater than 25 employees
•    Needs to be from the greater-Bridgeport area (i.e. daily commuting distance) or willing to relocate to the greater Bridgeport area
•    Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends and incorporate them into the organizational plan •    Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff to manage and develop high-performance teams
•    Excellent project management and problem solving skills
•    Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to connect and communicate with staff across all levels of the organization, both individually and in groups
•    Capacity to enforce accountability and develop and empower staff
•    Enjoys working hard and tackling challenges; ability to act proactively and react as necessary
•    Not afraid to take charge of a situation and take unpopular stands when necessary
•    Analytic, thoughtful and decisive decision maker with the ability to prioritize and communicate to staff the key operational objectives necessary to achieve organizational goals
•    Evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment
•    Deep experience in program budgeting and fiscal management
•    Past experience managing HR functions including personnel, compensation, recruiting, professional development and progressive discipline
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and confident communicator
•    Action oriented, entrepreneurial, flexible and innovative when approaching operational management
•    Ability to see both big picture strategy and the day-to-day details; and subsequently the ability to translate strategy to day-to-day planning
•    Passion, humility, integrity, positive attitude, mission drive and self direction
•    Passion for, and personal interest in, Wholesome Wave’s mission
