Job Description About Upside Markets

Upside Markets offers urban communities convenient access to delicious and healthy food, beverages, and essential housewares in a compact, clean and well-organized footprint. Our markets stock hand-selected local and international beer, wine, tea and coffee, prepared foods, limited seasonal produce, cheese, bread, and an array of home necessities including toiletries, herbal and over-the-counter remedies, and cleaning supplies. Upside Markets is opening its first market in Noe Valley in October 2014.

The co-founders are long-time San Franciscans and food lovers with strong leadership experience in design, food, finance, technology, and operations. We are passionate about taste, quality, neighborhoods, simplicity, honesty, and generosity.

Executive Chef Position Description

The Chef should have experience in the food retail and restaurant sectors, and take a farm-to-table approach to creating delicious, nourishing food. The Chef is responsible for the prepared foods program, including menu planning, production, P&L, and kitchen staff.

This is a full-time salaried position. Upside Markets offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience, including benefits and equity.

Essential functions:
  • Planning all prepared food offerings, both ongoing and seasonal, for breakfast, lunch, dinner, bakery, and pantry items 
  • Managing food costs and driving revenue growth for prepared foods 
  • Production of prepared food for the store, including 
  • Finding and maintaining a commissary kitchen to support all food production 
  • Staffing for kitchen roles, including recruiting, training, development, and shift management 
  • Training staff at the store to sell and serve prepared foods 
  • Management of dry goods inventory and coordination with the sourcing department for ordering perishable ingredients 
  • Providing organizational leadership and participating in strategic decisions as a member of the management team 

Qualifications and skills:
  • Passion for good food, farm-to-table eating, urban living, and creating innovative experiences and menus 
  • Proactive, friendly nature, and flexibility in a dynamic, fast-paced environment 
  • Excellent communication skills, strong organization and management skills 
  • 8+ years of work experience in a production kitchen with progressing levels of responsibility 
  • Demonstrated leadership experience and interest in social entrepreneurship
