Farm Crew Position 47th Avenue Farm

  • Date Posted August 01, 2014
  • Location Lake Oswego, OR
  • Category Agriculture / Business
  • Job Type Summer Job
Job Description About Us:

All of our farm properties are managed sustainably using cover crops between vegetable rotations, beneficial insects, drip irrigation and conservation tillage techniques. This holistic farming system improves the tilth and fertility of the farmland. It also protects the woods, wetlands and communities that surround our farms. And it simply makes better vegetables.

Here in the Willamette Valley, our summer season starts in mid-May and continues through October, offering a changing menu for our CSA members every week as different vegetables reach their peak of flavor.

Position Description:

47th Ave Farm is hiring for the summer farm crew. Applicants with previous agricultural experience will be prioritized, however all hardworking & moti- vated individuals will be considered.

If you want to spend the summer working on and learning from one of the longest running CSA farms in Portland then this is the job for you! Typically members of the farm crew do a wide variety of jobs on the farm and there may be opportunities to special- ize. The farm crew does most of the seeding, trans- planting, weeding, and harvesting of the vegetable crops by hand. For irrigation we use t-tape and some hand lines and these are also moved by the crew. The farm crew may also be trained to use small equipment including a walk behind tiller, weed wacker & back- pack flame weeder.

This kind of farming requires physical strength and stamina. The farm has a few greenhouses, but the majority of our crops are grown outside. Year round vegetable production involves long days of repetitive work in all kinds of weather and can be challenging. We are looking for folks who are seri- ous about farming and know from experience that they enjoy this kind of work.

The farm crew works best when everyone is highly motivated and able to work quickly and efficiently. There will be times when individuals work by themselves and lots of time spent work- ing cooperatively with others. The farm crew must be responsible, reliable and take initiative. It is also important that people be flexible and able to learn and adapt to new systems quickly. Attention to detail is required and a good sense of humor comes in handy too!

The Portland-based farm crew meets every morning at Laura’s house, 6632 SE 47th Ave, to car- pool to Luscher Farm, 125 Rosemont, Lake Oswego. The Portland-based crew will sometimes travel down to the Grand Island Farm during the course of the season.

The Grand Island-based farm crew meets every morning at 18400 SE Lower Island Rd. This crew will spend the majority of their time at the Grand Island farm and may occasionally travel to the Portland farm. Housing is not available on either farm.

During the summer the farm crew can expect a 50-hour workweek including CSA pickups and occasional Saturday work parties. Winter hours are less. The farm is a fertile learning ground for those who are willing to work hard.

  • Disciplined, hard working, organized, responsible, independent and positive
  • Previous farm experience a plus
