Philip’s Academy Charter School in Newark, NJ has an opening for a Chef Manager. The school takes great pride in it’s food service and has instituted a set of nutritional and dietary standards that emphasize healthy eating habits for our entire community. The food service is the center piece of our Eco_SPACES program whose goal is “healthy living on a healthy planet”. Each day we provide a made from scratch lunch that meets a stringent set of mandates. Serving a healthy, fresh, and diverse lunch to our 400 plus K-8 student body and faculty is a priority. The program is also supported by a roof top garden, an indoor aeroponics laboratory which grows micro greens for our salad bar and a separate teaching kitchen. This is a 10-month salaried position with holidays and summers off.
The Chef Manager will be responsible for overseeing all food production and maintaining an innovative, cutting edge nutritional breakfast and lunch program that meets the needs of students as well as faculty and staff.
Reporting to the Program Director, the ideal Chef Manager candidate will possess the following:
• Culinary management experience within a large volume, quality-focused setting and catering
• High expectations for customer service and quality of food.
• Understanding of financials as they apply to cost controls of food, labor and purchasing.
• Ability and willingness to develop and train frontline employees.
• Passion for food, health and innovation for menu/recipe development.
• Interest in food education and willingness to visit classrooms and lead food-oriented activities
• Knowledge of special diets and allergens helpful.
• Culinary degree (preferred).
• Enjoy working with children
• Sense of humor
The typical hours of this position are 7:00 AM – 3:30 with very occasional nights and weekends.
