Job Description
Main Street Cheese, LLC is a new, small-scale, woman-owned goat dairy committed to the craft of cheesemaking. It is inspired by both a devotion to artisanal production as well as a conviction that local, sustainable agriculture can help to usher in a new, life-centered, generative economy through consumer and citizen action. Its herd of 20 Alpine goats live upt the road from the cheesery, where they have plentiful browse. Main Street Cheese sells its fresh and aged cheeses directly to people at its honor-system shop on Main Street, in Hancock, New Hampshire.
We have an immediate opening for a Goat Milker/Cheesery Assistant for 25 hours per week in exchange for an apartment, including all utilities, in the beautiful village of Hancock in the Monadnock Region of Southern New Hampshire. We are looking for a highly motivated, conscientious, and hardworking person who cares deeply for animal welfare and local agriculture. Great attentiveness to cleanliness and sanitary practices is essential. The ability to be flexible to fill in for others now and then in a cooperative crew, sometimes at short notice, will be a plus.
The job primarily involves milking shifts, mixing fresh cheeses,
and going to farmers market, however, at times the position will involve more wide-ranging tasks associated with cheesemaking, retailing, raising kids, goat care, mucking, and managing hay supplies.
Qualifications: Experience working with animals and on a farm is desired, though a committed and enthusiastic person willing to learn is possible. A strong work ethic as well as a cooperative, can-do attitude are essential.
