Our AmeriCorps Program:

The YWCA Central Alabama currently has 40 full-time AmeriCorps member positions available that are designed to further the work of the YWCA and its partnering agencies in the community. Each position is distinct, centered around nonprofit service and designed to further the work of the YWCA and its partnering agencies. 

All positions are based in metro-Birmingham and are primarily during normal business hours. Benefits include a living allowance of $1,000 per month (in lieu of a salary), an educational award of $5,645 upon completion, health insurance, student loan forbearance, an opportunity to serve with some of Birmingham’s premier nonprofit organizations and extensive professional development. Men and women are encouraged to apply. A bachelor’s degree is required for most positions. An interest in the mission of the YWCA and partnering agencies is essential. Extensive background checks are performed on members.

Position Description:

Responsible to: NRC Executive Director

Basic Function:

Provide coordination and volunteer support for the Norwood Learning Gardens Program, a community garden and youth education program for residents of the Norwood neighborhood and 4th and 5th grade Norwood Elementary School students.

Essential Responsibilities:    
  • Primarily responsible for coordinating the Norwood Learning Gardens program.
  • Provide ongoing support to community residents, students, volunteers and Master Gardeners in the Norwood Learning Gardens program.  
  • Public Relations and promotions for NLG.
  • Collaborate with NLG Master Gardeners, teachers, principal, PTAs, and community leaders to promote program and to encourage participation in the Norwood Learning Gardens program.
  • In collaboration with NLG Master Gardeners, schedule and coordinate all Norwood Learning Gardens events and related activities.
  • Lift and carry up to 30lbs.
  • Maintain detailed statistics and evaluations regarding the students and residents served by the Norwood Learning Gardens program.
  • Plan and direct the Norwood Learning Gardens Youth Summer program, including recruiting staff and volunteers, coordinating the curriculum and enrichment activities, and ensuring the smooth implementation of the program.
  • Provide service on some evening and weekends.
  • Responsible for on-going professional growth and knowledge of current developments within the field.
  • Attend required meetings and in-service trainings
  • Adhere to the policies of Norwood Resource Center.
  • Perform all other duties deemed necessary for the smooth operation of the program and the agency, as directed by the Program and Operations Coordinator or the Executive Director of the NRC.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.       
  • Teaching or training experience preferred.       
  • Professional experience facilitating with social media, blogging andproducing newsletters preferred.       
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with adults and children.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Background check and citizenship clearance
