Urban Farmer Love & Carrots

  • Date Posted July 11, 2014
  • Location Washington, DC
  • Category Agriculture / Production
  • Job Type Part-Time
Job Description Who we are:

Love & Carrots is more than landscaping…

We design, install, and maintain organically grown vegetable gardens, transforming your backyard into a fresh, organic banquet.   We at Love & Carrots believe the local food movement is a critical catalyst in environmental activism. In the United States the potential for impact by way of everyday choices is immense, yet after decades of consumerism-as-champion, our culture does not easily lend itself widespread change through daily choices. We believe food is a good start.

Love & Carrots provides gardening assistance to people who would like to have an organic vegetable garden in their backyard, front yard, patio, balcony, or even bay window. DC is unique in that it has abundant yard space for a city. Many people here have both a front and back yard, however not many people use these spaces to grow food. We would like to see that potential realized and so far, we have seen that the interest in home gardening in DC already exists. Our aim is to help get people started growing their own food as locally as possible – in their own yard!

Who you are:

A person looking to share awesome food growing and gardening skills with us while learning more about urban farming, greenhouse production, garden installation and carpentry and more!  Maybe it's your hobby, maybe it's your career path -- either way, we're a great place to help you get to the next level of your journey.

Experience:
  • At least one full Season of growing experience on a farm, or in a community garden, etc.
  • A knowledge of proper harvesting, weeding, transplanting, sowing, fertilization and rotation/secession planting techniques.
  • Carpentry or building experience a plus (eg. cold frame construction, trellis installation, raised bed building etc.)
  • A knowledge of Mid-South climate as it relates to Seasonality, Hardiness Zones, and common growing practices for the region.

Necessary Qualifications:
  • An affinity for veggies, soil, local food, getting dirty, and working hard.
  • An ability to work independently, taking initiative and the ability to function as part of a team, leading and following direction as necessary.
  • A driver's license and mode of transportation -- Our Farm and Main Office are located in Hyattsville, MD and we're going to need you to be able to reliably get there AND to all of our Clients' gardens which span the DC Metro Area and into Maryland and Virginia.
  • The ability to lift 50 lbs. or so; the job is definitely physically demanding as is all agricultural work, so please consider this.
  • A positive, can-do attitude!
