Job Description About Big City Farms
Big City Farms (BCF), a Baltimore-based urban farming company, is building a national network of urban farms that create good jobs for worker-owners, transform neighborhoods by improving blighted urban land, and produce ultra-local, healthy food using sustainable, biological growing methods. BCF grows, processes, and sells produce from its network of hoophouse (plastic greenhouse) farms to restaurants, institutions, grocers, and individual consumers. BCF aspires to be a national and global leader in commercially-viable, environmentally-sustainable urban agriculture, and in employee-ownership and democratic governance.

Job description: Essential duties will include (in order of the portion of total time spent on each, with #1 representing the largest portion of total time):
  1. Planting, harvesting, and caring for crops in greenhouses.
  2. Assisting with construction of new greenhouses and other farm facilities and structures.
  3. Doing routine maintenance checks and making repairs to farm structures and tools.
  4. Entering information into farm records (for example, recording number of pounds harvested)
  5. Occasionally assisting with the washing, packaging, and/or delivery of harvested produce.

Essential Skills:
  1. Candidates with farm work experience and a strong interest in sustainable agriculture are strongly preferred.
  2. Must be able to work in high temperature (as high as 105F) and high humidity conditions throughout the summer, and in cold conditions (as low as 5F when working outside of greenhouses) during the winter.
  3. Must be able to lift at least 40 lbs.
Days and Hours:
  1. This is a full-time, year-round job.
  2. Typical total weekly hours will be between 40 and 45, typically 8 to 9 hours per day.
  3. Typical daily work hours are 7am-3:30pm, but exact daily hours will remain flexible depending on the season and current production requirements.
  4. Some weekend and holiday work may be required, depending on the season.
  5. Farmers must be able to work as needed during emergencies, and should be able to occasionally work for longer shifts of up to 12 hours.
Starting salary, equity, and benefits:
  1. Starting salary will be $22,880 per year (paid weekly at $440 per week)
  2. All employees will be eligible to become worker-owners by earning grants of stock in the company.
  3. All employees will receive 10 paid personal days per year.
