About the Prince George's County Extension Office:

The Prince George’s County Extension office is part of a countywide educational system, sponsored jointly by the University of Maryland, Prince George’s County Government, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  The Prince George's County Extension Advisory Council also provides support and guidance in assessing needs, identifying resources and managing local funds. It is our goal to provide you with up-to-date, research based information that will have a positive impact on you, your family, your community and our county.

Position Description:

Duties:

  • Coordinate science based programs at the Center for Educational Partnership (CEP) in Riverdale. This consists of both youth and adult programming, specifically in the areas of Urban Agriculture, Gardening and Sustainability and 4-H Youth Development, particularly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related projects including robotics and bicycle repair and safety.
  • Responsible for coordination and daily operation of the Community Garden. Identify resources in the community and on campus and coordinate efforts to utilize and leverage these financial and human resources.
  • Recruit and coordinate UMD students and community residents to actively serve as volunteers for UME and other center programs. Supervise student projects.
  • Develop, recruit and oversee internship opportunities for UMD students.
  • Establish relationships and partnerships with schools, health facilities, social services, county agencies and NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) in the surrounding community. 
  • Reach out to Latinos and other minorities in the Riverdale community to increase awareness of and engagement in UME programming efforts.
Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in agriculture, mechanical sciences, ag engineering, plant science, etc.; community education; multicultural education, or other related fields.
  • Ability to effectively recruit and mentor University of Maryland students and community volunteers
  • Ability to work with diverse audiences
  • Ability to effectively recruit and mentor University of Maryland students and community volunteers
  • Must have valid driver’s license and transportation.
Preferences:

  • Familiarity with community education and multi-cultural environments.
  • Understanding of and strong belief in volunteerism and youth development
  • Technically competent, understanding of and ability to use basic computer programs, etc.
  • M.S. preferred.
  • Bilingual
